What is Conformal Coating in PCB Manufacture (Part 5)

So let’s continue to talk about which parts and components that can’t be covered by conformal coating.

In PCB manufacturing, there are certain parts and components that should not be coated with conformal coating, including:

1. Heat dissipation related components:

High-power heat sinks, heat sinks, power resistors, etc., which require effective heat conduction and can be hindered by conformal coating.

2. Specific resistance components:

Cement resistors, etc., which have special heat dissipation or performance requirements and are not suitable for conformal coating.

What is Conformal Coating in PCB Manufacture (Part 4)

Let's continue to learn about the common quality requirements of conformal coating.

The Quality requirements for PCB when applying conformal coating include:

1. No runs and drips:

After applying conformal coating, the PCB surface must not have any paint runs or drips. Especially when using a brush to apply the coating, it is essential to ensure that drips do not occur on the isolated areas of the board that do not require coating.

2. Coating uniformity:

The conformal coating layer should be smooth, shiny, and uniformly thin across the entire PCB surface. This layer must fully cover the solder pads, surface-mounted components, or conductive surfaces to provide effective protection.

What is Conformal Coating in PCB Manufacture (Part 3)

Let's continue to learn about the specific operational requirements.

The conformal coating operation requirements:

1. Work environment:

The environment for applying conformal coating must be dust-free and clean to prevent dust contamination of the coating. Good ventilation is essential to effectively expel harmful gases and vapors, ensuring the health of operators. Unauthorized personnel are not allowed to enter the work area to avoid interference and increased risk of contamination.

2. Personal protection:

Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment when applying conformal coating, including masks or gas masks to prevent inhalation of harmful gases, rubber gloves to prevent skin contact with chemicals, and chemical-resistant goggles to protect the eyes from splashes.

What is Conformal Coating in PCB Manufacture (Part 2)

In the previous article, we explained the specific functions and applications of conformal coating. Next, we will discuss the process specifications and requirements for applying conformal coating step by step.

Firstly, the spray painting requirements are as follows:

1. Spray thickness: The thickness of the coating should be controlled between 0.05mm and 0.15mm. The dry film thickness should be 25um to 40um.

2. Secondary coating: To ensure the thickness for products with high protection requirements, a second coating can be applied after the film has cured (determine whether a secondary coating is needed based on specific requirements).

3. Inspection and repair: Visually inspect whether the coated circuit board meets the quality requirements and repair any issues. For example: if pins and other protected areas are contaminated with conformal coating, use tweezers to hold a cotton ball or clean cotton ball dipped in panel cleaning solution to clean it. Be careful not to wash away the normal coating during the cleaning process.

What is Conformal Coating in PCB Manufacture (Part 1)

It is well known that the surface of some PCB products is very smooth, can reflect light, and is often more durable than general PCB products. So, how is this achieved? The answer is that manufacturers use a special coating called conformal coating. Today, let's look at how conformal coating makes PCB "shine brightly."

Conformal coating is a specially formulated coating designed to protect PCB and related equipment from environmental erosion. It has good resistance to high and low temperatures, and after curing, it forms a transparent protective film with superior insulation, moisture resistance, leakage prevention, shock resistance, dust resistance, corrosion resistance, aging resistance, and electrical shock resistance.

How to Dismantle the Electronic Components on PCB (Part 2)

Let's continue learning how to remove components from multi-layer PCB.

Removing components from multi-layer printed circuit boards: If you use the methods mentioned in the previous article (except for the solder flow soldering machine method), it will be difficult to remove and can easily cause connection failures between layers. Generally, the soldering pin method is used, which cuts the component off at the root of its pins, leaving the pins on the printed circuit board, and then the pins of the new component are soldered onto the pins left on the printed circuit board. However, this is not easy for multi-pin integrated components. The solder flow soldering machine (also known as the secondary soldering machine) can solve this problem and is currently the most advanced tool for removing integrated components from double and multi-layer printed circuit boards. However, the cost is relatively high. The solder flow soldering machine is essentially a special type of small wave soldering machine that uses a solder flow pump to extract molten solder that has not been oxidized from the solder pot, and then it emerges through a selectable specification of solder spraying nozzle, forming a local small wave peak, acting on the bottom of the printed circuit board. The solder on the pins of the components to be removed and the solder holes on the printed circuit board will melt immediately within 1-2 seconds, at which point the component can be easily removed. Then, use compressed air to blow through the solder holes of the component area, insert a new component, and then solder the finished product on the wave peak of the solder spraying nozzle.

How to Dismantle the Electronic Components on PCB (Part 1)

After installing electronic components on a PCB, you may need to remove them from the PCB due to reasons such as component incompatibility or damage. However, for most people, removing electronic components is not an easy task. Today, let's learn how to remove electronic components.

Let's start with single-sided PCB:

To remove components from a single-sided printed circuit board, methods such as the toothbrush method, screen method, needle method, solder sucker, and pneumatic suction gun can be used.

Most simple methods for removing electronic components (including advanced pneumatic suction guns from abroad) are only suitable for single-sided boards and are not effective for double-sided or multi-layer boards.

The Etch factor in Ceramic PCB (Part 2)

Let's continue to learn about the factors that affect the etching factor in ceramic PCB and how to adjust the etching factor to manufacture high-performance ceramic PCB.

Factors affecting the etching factor include the composition, concentration, and temperature of the etching solution, as well as the thickness and surface area of the copper layer on the ceramic substrate.

Reducing the etching factor can enhance the durability and performance of DCB products. Specifically, by adjusting the photo tool design spacing to 0.43mm and increasing the etching line speed to 0.8250m/min, the etching factor can be effectively reduced to 2.19, which can increase the number of thermal shock cycles. This effectively improves the reliability of DBC ceramic substrates used in products such as semiconductor coolers, LED, and power semiconductors......

The Etch factor in Ceramic PCB (Part 1)

Today, let's understand what the etching factor is in ceramic substrates.

In ceramic PCB, there is a type of PCB called DBC ceramic PCB, which refers to Direct Bonded Copper ceramic substrates. This is a new type of composite material where a ceramic substrate made of highly insulating aluminum oxide or aluminum nitride is directly bonded with copper metal. Through high-temperature heating at 1065~1085°C, the copper metal oxidizes and diffuses at high temperatures with the ceramic to form an eutectic melt, bonding the copper to the ceramic substrate and forming a ceramic composite metal substrate.

The process flow for DBC ceramic PCB is as follows:

- Raw material cleaning

- Oxidation

- Sintering

- Pre-treatment

- Film application

- Exposure (phototool)

- Development

- Etching (corrosion)

- Post-treatment

- Cutting

- Inspection

- Packaging
