The Secret Language of Optical Pull Tabs
(Shot at Zkosemi's workshop, this video opens with a close-up shot of various colored pull tabs in a rack)
Narrator: "In the high-density world of data centers, pull tab colors are the universal language for engineers. They tell you the module's fiber type, wavelength, and distance at a glance. Let's decode them."
1. The Color Code: What Each Color Means
⚫ Black Tab (Multi-mode, Short Reach):
Meaning: Multi-mode fiber (MMF), 850nm wavelength.
Distance: Typically ≤ 300 meters (e.g., 100G SR4, 40G SR4, AOCs).
Application: Short-distance server-to-switch connections within racks or rows.
🔵 Blue Tab (Single-mode, Standard Reach):
Meaning: Single-mode fiber (SMF), 1310nm wavelength.
Distance: Standard distances like 10km, 20km (e.g., LR, 10km/20km modules).
Application: Standard intra-data center or campus links.
🟡 Yellow Tab (Single-mode, Extended Reach):
Meaning: Single-mode, 1550nm wavelength, often extended temperature range.
Distance: 40km and above (e.g., ER, 40km modules).
Application: Longer-distance links, harsh environments.
🟢 Green Tab (Special Variants):
Meaning: Often denotes BiDi (Bi-Directional) or CWDM modules, or ultra-long-haul (80km+).
Application: Specialized applications requiring wavelength division multiplexing.
2. Transceiver vs. AOC Pull Tabs: Key Differences
(1)Pull Tab Type:Pluggable Optical Transceivers use Bail Latches - A separate, rigid metal or plastic loop, while AOCs adopt integrated molding tabs - A flexible, molded plastic tab part of the cable assembly.
(2)Primary Function: for pluggable optical transceivers, to unlatch and extract from the cage. For AOCs, to strain-relieve and pull the entire cable assembly without stressing the connectors.
(3)Color Coding: Transceivers follows the standard color code (Black, Blue, Yellow, etc.), while AOCs’s pull tabs are almost exclusively BLACK, as they are short-reach multi-mode devices (even if internally using SMF, the tab is usually black for consistency).
(4)Handling: Transceivers require careful handling of the delicate latch, while AOCs’s tabs use softer pull, designed for high-density cabling management.
3. What is the Purpose of the Pull Tab?
(1) Mechanical Function: To safely insert and remove the module from the switch port without touching the sensitive optics.
(2) Visual Identification: The color is the first indicator of the module's core specification (MMF/SMF, distance).
(3) Error Prevention: Prevents technicians from plugging a multi-mode module into a single-mode link, which would cause complete link failure.
4. High-Speed vs. Low-Speed Pull Tabs
(1) Low-Speed (1G/10G SFP): Often have simpler, smaller bail latches.
(2) High-Speed (40G/100G/400G QSFP): The pull tabs are sturdier and wider to handle the increased density and heat dissipation requirements. The color coding logic remains the same (e.g., Black for SR4, Blue for LR4).
5. ZKOSEMI (Shenzhen ZKOSEMI) Advantages
(1) Deep Technical Expertise: We understand these mechanical details because we design from the chip level (VCSEL/DFB) to the finished module.
(2) Reliability Focus: Our pull tabs are designed for high cycle life and easy operation in dense AI cluster environments.
(3) Customization (JDM/ODM): We can customize tab colors and designs per your data center color-coding standards to prevent operational errors.
6. Important Warnings for Customers
⚠️ Color is Not Absolute: While black usually means multi-mode, always check the label (SR vs. LR) and datasheet. Some vendors use non-standard colors.
⚠️ Don't Pull the Cable! For AOCs, always pull using the molded tab, never yank the cable itself, as this can damage the internal fibers.
⚠️ ESD Safety: Always use the pull tab to handle modules; avoid direct finger contact with the golden fingers or connectors.
