Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) monitors temperature over long distances in cable corridors, pipelines, tunnels, tanks, plants, mines, and fire detection systems.

【DAS vs DTS: Two Fibers, Two Jobs, One Cable】
Both are distributed fiber optic sensors. Both run for miles without power. But they detect totally different things:

🔧 DAS/DVS (Acoustic/Vibration)
Detects: Vibrations, sound waves, strain, physical disturbances
How: Phase-sensitive OTDR. Laser pulses create Rayleigh backscatter. Vibrations shift the phase of this scattered light. System tracks phase changes to pinpoint exactly where (±1m) and what (digging vs. climbing vs. vehicle).
Best for: Perimeter security, third-party intrusion on pipelines, tunnel structural monitoring.

🌡️ DTS (Temperature)
Detects: Temperature changes, hotspots, thermal trends
How: Raman scattering. Measures intensity ratio of anti-Stokes to Stokes light, which correlates directly with temperature.
Best for: Cable tunnel fire detection, tank farm monitoring, leak detection (leaks often create localized cooling/heating).

💡 The Practical Win:
Use the same cable with different fiber cores. DTS watches for slow thermal buildup (fire risk). DAS watches for sudden mechanical attacks (digging, drilling).

【DAS vs. DVS: Same Hardware, Different "Thinking Mode"】

In fiber optic sensing, a common question arises: What's the real difference between DAS and DVS?
The answer: Same hardware, different mindset.
🔹 DVS (Distributed Vibration Sensing) acts like the fiber's "sense of touch." It measures vibration intensity and duration — answering the simple question: "Is there vibration?" However, in complex environments (wind, rain, animals), it tends to trigger alarms for any disturbance, leading to higher false alarm rates.
🔹 DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) acts more like the fiber's "sense of hearing." It captures vibration frequency and phase information — analyzing the "sound fingerprint" of each event. Footsteps, climbing, fence-cutting, digging... each intrusion generates a unique acoustic signature.
📌 Core Difference:
DVS asks: "Is there vibration?" → Threshold-based judgment
DAS asks: "What is the vibration?" → Pattern recognition & acoustic analysis
📌 In Perimeter Security Scenarios:
DAS can distinguish between "wind shaking the fence" and "an intruder climbing it," dramatically reducing false alarms. DVS, on the other hand, often struggles to tell the difference.
✅ Bottom Line:
The underlying hardware is nearly identical. The real differentiator lies in algorithms and information extraction capability. In perimeter intrusion detection, DAS — with its "intelligent hearing" — is increasingly becoming the industry standard.
