Did you know Cameroon is home to two of Africa's largest landfill sites: Nkolfoulou Landfill in Yaoundรฉ (56 hectares) and PK10 Landfill in Douala (63 hectares).
To put this into perspective, PK10 covers an area nearly twice the size of Olembe StadiumโCameroon's largest stadium and reaches depths of approximately 25 meters. These are more than dumpsites; they are buried cities of waste, continuously releasing pollutants that contaminate our soil, water, and air.
Despite the efforts of the national waste management service, HYSACAM, most municipal waste still ends up in landfills. Open dumping, open burning, plastic pollution, and contaminated waterways remain widespread because effective waste separation, recycling, and recovery systems are still limited.
This is not merely an environmental concern, it is a public health, economic, and national development challenge.
Studies show that over 61% of what we throw everyday is useful. Every day, we bury resources that could strengthen industries, create jobs, and protect our environment:
- Aluminum can be recycled using far less energy than producing it from raw materials.
- Plastic bottles can become raw materials for new products.
- Paper can be transformed into new packaging and paper products.
- Organic waste can become nutrient-rich compost or bioenergy feedstock.
Unfortunately, because most waste is mixed together before disposal, recovering these valuable materials becomes difficult and expensive.
Instead of building a circular economy, we continue burying valuable resources in landfills.
Introducing E-cycle:
E-cycle is an innovative waste management solution that seperates waste upon collection, connects waste back to specialized manufacturing plants, creating a circular economy that creates jobs, supports industries, and protects the environment.
Rather than treating waste as something to discard, E-cycle treats it as the beginning of a new value chain.
