Would you rather have an amazing boss with terrible coworkers or amazing coworkers with a terrible boss?

Nothing humbles you at work like confidently saying, “I’ll handle it,” and immediately realising you have absolutely no idea how. 😂

People think changing careers is just learning a new skill, updating your CV and applying for jobs.

Career transitions can be exciting, but they can also come with challenges nobody prepares you for.

Here are 5 reasons career transitions are harder than people expect:

1. Your previous experience may not speak the new career’s language.

You might have 5 years of administrative experience, but simply writing handled office duties on your CV won't show a recruiter that you already know how to organise schedules, manage documents, communicate with clients and coordinate tasks.

You may have the skills. You just haven't translated them properly.

2. You suddenly become a beginner in something you care about.

Imagine working in accounting for years and then deciding to move into digital marketing.

You may be excellent at your current job, but now you're struggling to understand content strategy, analytics or advertising platforms.

That doesn't mean you can't do it.

It means you are learning again.

3. You can struggle to know which jobs to apply for.

Someone moving from teaching into corporate training might search only for teacher jobs.

But their skills could also fit roles like training coordinator, learning and development assistant or corporate trainer.

Sometimes the problem isn't that there are no opportunities.

You're looking at your experience through your old job title.

4. Getting experience in the new field can feel like a chicken-and-egg situation.

You need experience to get the job.

But you need the job to get experience. 😭

One way to start breaking that cycle is by creating sample content, managing a small business page, volunteering for an organisation or building your own portfolio.

You need proof that you can do the work, not just a certificate saying you studied it.

5. Your income may not transition as quickly as your ambition.

You can be ready to leave your old career mentally while your finances are still depending on it.

Someone earning a stable salary in banking may want to move into tech, but starting over could mean taking a lower-paying role while building experience.

That financial reality can make people postpone the transition for months or even years.

Career transitions are not always about whether you want the change badly enough. Sometimes you have to figure out how to make the change happen.

If you've ever transitioned from one career to another, what was the hardest part for you?

A lot of people aren't afraid of failure. They're afraid of starting again and looking inexperienced.

If your skills have grown but your rate hasn’t, something needs to change.

You don’t have to wait until you desperately need more money before reviewing what you charge.

Your rate deserves a second look when:

1. Your workload has increased.
You’re handling more tasks, more responsibility, or work that wasn’t part of the original agreement.

2. Your skills have improved.
You can now confidently use CRMs, project-management tools, automation platforms, customer-support systems, or other tools you couldn’t handle before.

3. Your work creates more value.
You’re no longer just completing tasks. You’re helping save time, improve systems, support customers, organize operations, or keep the business moving.

4. Your responsibilities have outgrown your pricing.
If the level of work you’re delivering has increased but your rate has stayed the same, it’s time to review it.

And no, raising your rate doesn’t mean blindsiding your existing clients.

Give them reasonable notice. Communicate the new rate clearly and state when it takes effect.

For new clients, your updated rate can apply from the start.

Don’t keep your pricing frozen because you’re afraid someone might say no.

Your skills can grow.
Your responsibilities can grow.
The value you provide can grow.

Your rate should have room to grow too.

Know your value. Review your rate. Price accordingly.

Unpopular career truth: another certificate won't save you if you still can't do the work.

Yes, certificates matter. But they are not the same as capability.

Many graduates leave school with certificates but struggle to show what they can actually do.

That’s why building a marketable skill matters.

1. A skill creates options.
Your degree may qualify you for a role. A practical skill can open opportunities across different roles, industries and clients.

2. Skills travel with you.
Companies restructure. Jobs disappear. Your ability to write, design, analyse, sell, edit or manage projects stays with you.

3. Skills become more valuable with practice.
The better you get, the stronger your portfolio, results and earning opportunities can become.

4. One skill can create multiple income streams.
Employment. Freelancing. Consulting. Teaching. Digital products.

One skill. Different ways to earn.

5. Don't just claim the skill. Prove it.
Build projects. Create a portfolio. Document your results.

Because saying “I can do it” is different from showing someone that you can.

Your certificate tells people what you studied.

Your skill shows them what you can deliver.

So yes, keep learning.

But don't spend your entire career collecting certificates while avoiding the part that makes you valuable:

Learning how to actually do the work.

Learn. Build. Earn.

Save this if you're a graduate building your career from scratch.
