This Monday, we’re starting the week with an image that has stayed with us. 🩷
In 1977, poet Deena Metzger was photographed with her arms raised to the sky, a mastectomy scar on one side of her chest, marked with a tattooed branch. The poster, The Warrior, became one of the most recognised images of life after breast cancer.
Her warrior wasn’t someone fighting a battle. She was someone who refused to be made invisible.
A year later, poet Audre Lorde chose not to wear a prosthesis after her own mastectomy. Her message was simple: the decision about how a body looks after cancer belongs to the woman, never to the comfort of others.
Today, women have more options than ever, from reconstruction to flat closure to no reconstruction at all. But the principle is the same. Every option deserves to be seen, understood and freely chosen. ✨
This Pinktober, we’re carrying one thought into the week: awareness matters, but choice matters too.
