If the roman forms of Beatrice created a new set of rules, the italics bend these rules in new directions and sometimes break them altogether. Display and Headline’s true italics are distinguished by their unique swash capitals and expressive lowercases, reminiscent of cursive lettering. Deck and Standard’s italics are designed as straightforward corrected slants of their roman counterparts due to their lower contrast and point size application. In order to maintain a consistent production logic within the superfamily, Display and Headline also contain alternate lowercase and uppercase forms that adhere to the construction style of the slanted roman and are accessible via a stylistic set. This was done not just for the sake of completeness, but also in anticipation of a future variable Beatrice font.

Visual Grammar: when we first released Beatrice in 2018, Lucas Sharp’s design landed in largely unexplored territory by deconstructing a variety of contrast methodologies and then building something novel on the foundation. An unconventional process made for a strikingly original typeface. Since its release, and .fontzarelli—with invaluable assistance from and —have been closing the gap left in-between the indelible Display and its more staid counterpart, Beatrice Standard. With the addition of Headline and Deck, the Beatrice Collection offers a more complete spectrum of applications, filling what Lucas jokingly refers to as “the chasm of utility.” This smooth, interpolatable range of weights finally codifies the visual grammar that gives Beatrice such an iconic and exuberant presence.

Personal fonts-in-use projects hold a special place in our hearts, especially when they’re executed so beautifully and imbued with such love 💌

We recently came across the work of .bourge who is a designer based in Paris. For her mom’s 60th birthday, she compiled dozens of family recipes into a book of her own design and making, using Carta Nueva for the titles:

“I hadn’t planned on using a script font for the titles. I did, however, want to use a font with a vintage feel to it, but not too old-fashioned. I thought Carta Nueva had that special look to it, majestic without being too traditional. I fell in love with how thin it was.”

Designed by , Carta Nueva is a typeface that rewards sustained attention. Its forms reflect My-Lan’s precise and detail-oriented eye. It seems fitting that Sarah showcased Carta in a recipe book, which requires the reader to return to and pore over its pages time and time again. It’s a reminder that one of the many functions of letterforms is to hold, and to also share, our rituals and memories.

Construction hardware and computer software meet here. One day on a walk near his home in Zürich, saw a van owned by a construction company with a logo that provided the initial inspiration for his latest type-in-progress. “It seems that the company doesn’t exist anymore because I recently crosssed the van again, but in another hood. They had removed the marking so the logo now a ghost logo, which looks nice.”

As the design progressed, he was further influenced by computer software and sci-fi aesthetics. (At one point Arnold was the working name.) “This one should be used for a video game, or a game console.”

Red cloth with silver embossing beautifully showcases Carta Nueva by . Cover for Emmy Hennings / Sitara Abuzar Ghaznawi, the first English translations of poems and writings by the artist Emmy Hennings (1885-1948), who co-founded Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich with Hugo Ball and started the Dada movement. The book is a dialogue of sorts between Hennings and Ghaznawi, who created frames and encounters for Henning’s writings through collages, sculptures, and commissioned written pieces. Designed by Dan Solbach and presented by Cabaret Voltaire, Swiss Institute, and Lenz in June of 2022.

⚠️ Introducing Pyramid by ⚠️

For this latest type-in-progress, Zurich-based type designer Marc Rouault shared a bit about the influences that shaped its design:

“Both the design and (temporary) name come from a logo I found in book of hi-fi and electronic brands from Japan. It’s from an ad for a company that makes acoustic materials, like sound absorbing structures, for studios.

For reference points, one of the most prominent ones for this typeface—but also for the other fonts in the larger suite of designs I’m working on—is the aesthetics of electronics in general. I am fascinated by vernacular typography and lately came across a lot of music gear logos (drum machines, amps, controllers, mixers), and I think there is a vernacular flavor to them.

Outside of typography, I think of the retro-futurist aesthetic, rave flyers, and computer brands. Pyramid also has this weird combination of shapes that also make me think of the Memphis movement. But I think it should be used for the next collection.”

Introducing Sharp Type Print Edition 01: "Four Corners, Part 1"

A double-sided poster-zine for the type enthusiast and the type-curious, for students and pros alike. Showcases notable examples from our existing retail library, our trial fonts, and even a few soon-to-be-released gems. Features a digital link to download our growing trial font library.

In this series, we ruminate on material relating to geography and to travel, with a quiet emphasis on the rekindled joy of public gathering spaces. (This current edition is North-South; soon to be followed by East-West.) These posters will be available for free wherever we present at events in the near future: book fairs, conferences, lectures, etc.

We are so glad to make the initial printing of these specimens available to attendees at this year's (special thanks to ), which starts this week!

Eros Display update:

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve had some time in between projects to focus on the italic, and I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with ligatures and alternative forms. The Spaniard calligrapher whose work it’s based on has a lot of great stuff that inspires me, but I’ve been trying to push it further. While “El Maestro” Pedro Diaz Morante’s famous style serves as the basis, I am also using the contrast methodology of my fictional monumental roman lowercase to find a balance. As with all monumental romans, the contrast is formed by the translation of the brush strokes: with the traditional horizontal nib angle, the vertical strokes become the primary stroke value; the horizontal a secondary hairline value; and finally, a very fine tertiary value is made by lifting the brush on the out-strokes. The idea for the italic was to maintain those same primary/secondary/tertiary stroke values, but with a diagonal nib angle instead of a horizontal one. I’m hugely in love with Morante’s work. Imagine people attaching “El Maestro” to your title in 1776 for doing calligraphy. The swagger is real.”
