👀 Look at this striking AU Solidus of Anastasius I, minted in Constantinople. It’s a magnificent piece of history, just like the Emperor’s deeds.

👑 Anastasius I was a benevolent ruler who left a lasting legacy. During his reign from 491–518 AD, he implemented various reforms that improved the prosperity and stability of the Byzantine Empire. He restructured the taxation system, regulated public finances, and stabilized the Byzantine currency. He also reformed the military, civil service, and legal system.

This solidus features a nicely detailed bust of Anastasius I facing right on the obverse and Victory facing left, holding a cross in her right arm on the reverse. An outstanding issue with its pedigree going back to 1987. 🥇

This AR stater dated circa 379-338 BC showing us a Boeotian shield 🛡 on obverse, one of their key symbols and ancient 🏺Greek amphora on reverse. At that time, Boeotia played a big role in the Corinthian War against Sparta, especially in Haliartus and Coronea.

Boeotian shield was often depicted in Attic black-figure vase painting. Sadly none of these shields were able to make it to today.

Description: Boeotia. Thebes. AR 11.92 g 21.4 mm COP-352 vte. SBG-2395 vte. Little marks. MBC. Price realized: 825 EUR.

An interesting issue of Barbaric coinage, imitating AE follis of Flavius Anastasius, the emperor of Byzantine who ruled during 491-518 AD.

⚔️ During his reign he built multiple fortresses to secure his eastern frontier from Persians. He was often countering Bulgarians, Slavs, Ostrogoths, and local rebels of the previous emperor Zeno.

One interesting fact is that he was born with heterochromia 👁 (different colored eyes). For that reason, he was often referred to as *Dicorus* (two-pupiled in Greek).

🏅 Anastasius I left a great legacy by building an outstanding treasury and perfecting the monetary system of Byzantine. He died at night during a terrible thunderstorm — some claim that he was killed by a lightning bolt.

This AR Nomos was minted in Lucania, Metapontion circa 330-290 BC. Note the astonishing portrait of Demeter facing right on obverse. The reverse depicts a sharply struck barley with a leaf to the right and a plow above it. 🌾

Truly artistic issue with exceptional mint quality, struck from one of the finest die pairs of Metapontion. Very rare for its state. 👀🔥

✨Coin stats: Lucania. Metapontion. Circa 330-290 BC. AR Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.97 g, 1 h), light roughness on reverse, otherwise Extremely Fine.

Golden masks were often used for funeral processions 🪦 to pay tribute to the deceased warriors and rulers. They mostly had a religious significance, rather than the aesthetic one.

Made of gold metal sheet, funeral masks were discovered in Thracian, Macedonian, Assyrian, Hellenistic, Ancient Egyptian burials. The most well-known artifact of this type is undoubtedly the golden Mask of Agamemnon.

🏺🗿This Greek mask (Slide 2) dated around 6th century B.C. was likely pressed against the deceased warrior's face to render the face relief. It looks like it was attached to an Illyrian helmet judging by the perforated holes on top of it.

Masks and helmets are often found together. This is well documented from a number of Archeological sites. The graves often contain other objects such as bronze shield, iron swords, spear-points, gold ornaments and jewerly, chariot models, figures, etc.📿🛡

This beautiful AR didrachm was minted in Rhodos. The obverse depicts Helios, a god of Sun often represented as the patron of Rhodes island. You can see him shining facing the right side; On reverse – a rose with a bud 🌹, and standing Athena holding aphlaston to left.

According to legends, Helios had a son from his sea-nymph wife Rhode named Phaethon. Once he asked his father for a favor – to ride a blazing chariot across the heavens. Helios 🌞 promised to do anything his son wished for and kept this promise.

The tragedy was inevitable since only Helios was one who knew how to ride a chariot. Still, he allowed his son to fulfil his wish. There wasn't any ABS back then, so Phaethon started losing control of the chariot rather fast. He came too close to the Earth's orbit and nearly set it on fire🔥! Zeus couldn’t watch this madness go on, so he struck him down with a thunderbolt 🌩 to stop further damage done to Earth. 🌎
