We have attended a seminar by prof. Tessa West of the New York University, whose research focuses on "understanding the nature and dynamics of social perception".
The topic was "Building Communication in a Hybrid World". Truly exciting to talk her passionately and down-to-the-point about the problems we all face now! Prof. West identified the main challenges of professional meetings done with videoconferencing.
One is the strongly limited non-verbal communication, like gaze direction, cause anxiety and impedes our judgment of the social dynamics.
The other is missing the networking effects of real-life meetings. Observing who talks to whom before, during or after a meeting allows us to grasp the professional role of people, understand the network and build our own position.
Prof. West proposed a set of rules for videoconferencing that help to mitigate that, like a limit of 30 seconds for a single person to talk, or zoom coffee breaks with random sets of people.
