New groundbreaking study by EXALOS researches: AlInN layers could boost LD and SLED performance.

“This breakthrough paves the way for the widespread adoption of InAlN in the manufacturing of next-generation optoelectronic devices and unlocks a path towards the development of efficient emission at longer wavelengths”

MARCO MALINVERNI – EXALOS RESEARCH

The work, published in two recent journal articles and presented at the recent SPIE Photonics West conference, takes advantage of the properties of InAlN.

EXALOS introduces RGB Micro-Modules for the Development of Compact Smart Glasses at Photonics West in February 2022.

The world’s leading developer of visible Superluminescent Light Emitting Diodes (SLEDs) introduced what the company believes is the smallest RGB micro-module with laser diodes (LDs) or SLEDs. These modules will enable the development of augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) smart glasses designs based upon displays using laser beam scanning (LBS) architectures.

The RGB micro-modules can accommodate three LD chips, or a hybrid design of LD and SLED chips, in an ultra-compact package with a footprint of 4.40 mm x 4.15 mm and a height of 2.9 mm, with a total volume of only 0.053 cm3 and weight of less than 0.3 g. The semiconductor light sources are integrated on a free-space, micro-optical bench together with micro lenses and dichroic mirrors to deliver a collimated and coaxial RGB output. The design supports power levels of up to 10 mW/color and features EXALOS’ proprietary low-threshold LDs with total electrical power consumption of a few hundred milliwatts. The devices are designed for R&D purposes and are offered with a flex-PCB cable for electrical connectivity. The modules can be customized according to end user requirements and are fabricated through active alignment processes on EXALOS’ robotic micro-optical assembly line.

etaMeta may be the loudest company building AR and VR hardware. Microsoft has HoloLens. Apple is working on something, too. But don’t count out Google.
Google’s headset is still early in development without a clearly defined go-to-market strategy, which indicates that the 2024 target year may be more aspirational than set in stone. The hardware is powered by a custom Google processor, like its newest Google Pixel smartphone, and runs on Android, though recent job listings indicate that a unique OS is in the works. Given power constraints, Google’s strategy is to use its data centers to remotely render some graphics and beam them into the headset via an internet connection.

Just don’t call it the return of Google Glass.

From Bloomberg: Apple planned to reveal the headset at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, but “development challenges related to overheating, cameras and software have made it harder to stay on track”.
The issues mean the reveal may happen at the end of the year — or even later - with the headset going on sale in 2023. And Apple had apparently, at one point, planned to reveal the device even earlier; Bloomberg reports the company wanted to announce it in 2021 and ship it in 2022.

We might have to wait awhile.

Xiaomi shows off concept smart glasses with MicroLED display.
Xiaomi explains, that the chose monochrome MicroLED system because of its “higher pixel density and longer lifespan while having a simpler structure” when compared to OLED. According to Xiaomi, MicroLED “allows for a more compact display, as well as easier screen integration.”

Introducing Xiaomi Smart Glasses! Though at first glance these seem just ordinary glasses, MicroLED optical waveguide imaging technology puts a display in fr...
