The 2026 WebAIM Million report is out, and the number I keep coming back to is 95.9%. That's the share of the top one million homepages with detectable accessibility failures. It went up from 94.8% a year earlier, which breaks a run of slow improvement.

For a small business site, the page size matters more than the headline. The average homepage now has 1, 437 elements, a 22.5% jump in a single year. Every extra element is another place for a visitor to get stuck. If your contact form is the only thing between a lead and a phone call, one unlabeled field can cost you that call.

Low contrast text showed up on 83.9% of pages tested. Missing form labels showed up on 51%. Many of these are small fixes, not rebuilds.

Before the week is out, load your contact page on your own phone and read every field label and button out loud. Most people find at least one thing in under ten minutes.

Drip looked at 117 online brands and found the median desktop conversion rate sits at 3.93%, while mobile lands at 2.46%. Pull up your own analytics and split those two numbers apart before you spend another dollar on ads.

The order value gap bothers me more. Desktop buyers spend around €104 on average and mobile buyers spend around €79. So the problem isn't only who clicks the button. Phone shoppers are often getting a checkout that asks more of them and gives them less confidence to finish.

When we look at a small business site, we walk the whole flow on an actual phone over cellular data. Tap targets that are too small, forms that ask for everything at once, and pages that take their time to load are the usual suspects. Fixing those is far more practical than tweaking a headline.

Ruler Analytics works from more than 100 million tracked data points across 14 industries, and it puts the median B2B website at 2.9%. The part I keep coming back to is the split. Roughly 1.7% of that comes from forms and 1.2% comes from phone calls.

So a real chunk of your leads may arrive by phone, and that path is only as strong as the number sitting on your contact page. If the number is buried or the form asks for eight fields when you need two, you are losing people before they ever decide whether to call.

On a client site, the first thing we check is the contact route on an actual phone. Tap the number. Fill out the form with your thumb. See how many screens it takes to reach a human. Benchmarks tell you whether you are in the right range, but only your own funnel shows where visitors get stuck.

Test this yourself. Open your site on a phone using cellular data, not the office WiFi. A homepage that feels quick on a desktop can drag on a 5 inch screen, and the buttons that worked fine with a mouse are often too small for a thumb.

PageSpeed Insights gives you a mobile tab. Start there. If the numbers are red, that's your fix list, and speed, layout shifts, and tap response all affect whether someone stays long enough to fill out your contact form.

When you rebuild mobile from scratch instead of shrinking desktop, the numbers change. Faster load times on cellular networks. Forms that don't ask for information you don't need. Navigation that works with thumbs instead of a mouse. Button sizes designed for a 5 inch screen.

Desktop converts at 3.14%. Mobile converts at 1.82%. That's a 42% drop, and it's gotten worse since 2024 even though mobile optimization has been standard for a decade.

Most small business owners check one number: overall conversion rate. They see 2.5% or 3% and think they're tracking performance. They're not. They're averaging two completely different customer experiences into a single metric that hides the real problem.
