"You need to change, or we will need to discuss your performance"

A common line that almost anyone in the workforce has undoubtedly heard, but the question for me still remains, why was this not managed or coached beforehand?

As a Leader, it's important to ensure that when you are performance managing someone, you need to treat them the exact same way as when you celebrate accomplishments:

1. Provide constant feedback and specific evidence
2. Send an email to let them know you're there for them
3. Take them out (e.g. lunch/dinner/coffee) and have a HUMAN conversation with them.
4. Empathize and share a relevant story that you endured yourself.

Developing is all about a change in mindset...not a module, not a platform, not a workshop.

To develop as an individual, you probably learned - undoubtedly through school - that to become effective and change your level of intelligence, you need to MASTER and UNDERSTAND the material; history and events, parts of the body, math and science formulas and how they work. Once you've learned the content, you strive for more knowledge without an end goal (except of course, to pass different evaluations). Inherently, we learn to understand knowledge in order to gain more knowledge.

Yet when it comes to working with others and driving relationships, we tend to resort to "what works" and not strive to change our mindset. We tend to fall into traps of finite goals, seeking out relationships (personal and professional) to benefit our immediate situation, then move on. Instead, change your mindset to truly UNDERSTAND...your CUSTOMER...your FRIEND...your ACQUAINTANCE.

Learning a new method of how to "sell", "make friends" is limited in scope and has a finite goal that ultimately won't help you. Change your mindset and seek to understand, and you'll notice the results are unmatched.

Be the optimist you know you want to be.

Open your eyes and see the opportunity that's in front of you today...not tomorrow...not next week.

Are you an MVP of building strategy?...MVP isn't the most valuable person, rather it's:

Mission -> What is your purpose?
Vision -> What do you want to achieve?
Plan -> How are you going to get there?

Understanding that building a strategy to execute and deliver is essential in any aspect of life and is the foundation to providing yourself with 1) direction and 2) focus.

Food for thought for the week.

Yesterday I mentioned the importance of knowing your value.

Today I hope to enlighten you with some steps towards understanding your value. Comment below and add to this list as you see fit.

I'd love to see what you all have to contribute to this topic:

1) You have positive self-esteem. You believe in and like yourself. You are confident in the work you deliver and your sense of professionalism.

2) You recognize the difference you make. When you know your value, you will confidently approach a negotiation with full belief in your knowledge, skills, and experience and the difference you can make.

3) You see yourself as a peer as well. In any given situation, knowing your value means feeling that you are an equal with anyone you interact with: clients, bosses, colleagues, or friends. You are not a supplicant.

4) You do not undercharge/give away your services. Giving away your value and services can set a precedent which could be hard to remove.

5) You are engaged in work that is exciting and fulfilling. When you are involved in work that is fulfilling as well as financially rewarding, you are more inclined to work with even greater commitment. I believe that when you love what you do, you are prepared to do more and to become more.

Providing value requires an understanding of what "value" really is...when's the last time you asked what that means from YOUR customers?

Whether it be through your e-comm platform, marketing material, phone calls /voicemails, engagement surveys or simply your in-person interactions with clients, it's extremely important to understand the value that your buyer base actually wants from you.

Projecting and anticipating a change in market response is only half the battle - take a pulse on what customers say and how they respond to your "value" and this will be your best insight into how to run your brand.

Finding an understanding within yourself means to identify, quantify and qualify your abilities.

It all starts with the motivation to take action, create a self "To-Do" list and take action.

Presenting value is often misconstrued as over-highlighting a product/service you're selling. The best value you can present = authenticity.

No matter the type of "sales" you're in or what you present to any form of an audience, being clear and upfront about your motive and messaging is essential to captivating their attention. Seek to gain your audience's attention, and only then can you captivate their mind and peak their interest.

As this work week kicks off for most of us, I encourage all of you to really hone in on one thing...TIME

Value the time you invest into everything you do, but most importantly, reflect on where you spend the time being stagnant and "stuck". The hardest part of feeling successful and productive is most of us get "stuck" and feel that we can't move forward in anything we're trying to accomplish. I say:

1) TAKE THE TIME to REFLECT on what made you get "stuck" and evaluate
2) PIVOT and ADJUST your goal(s) to help you reset
3) PUSH through and COMMIT to the end goal(s)
4) Message me to set up a meeting for guidance and strategies

This time of year, many of us feel the "blue Monday" effect and get down on our ambitions and ourselves.

Rather than internalizing your battle with the blues, open up a conversation with someone and let it ventilate.

You CAN do it!

It's not just how you say it...it's about WHAT you say

Either from our parents, guardians, or some other parent-like figure, we all likely heard "watch what you say" growing up.

This old adage speaks volumes about who you are as a person when you present yourself to anyone. Check out the article I've linked below and create a checklist of how many phrases you tend to say in any scenario.

People who boast about their IQ are losers.
