Thanksgiving game night, with a little learning hiding in the stuffing 🦃
Five table games for the whole family. No worksheets, no prep, and one runaway turkey.
1. The gratitude alphabet: go around the table from A to Z, one thing you're thankful for per letter. Builds vocabulary and spelling. (Yes, B can be for your brother. Sometimes.)
2. Estimate the table: guess the rolls in the basket or the peas on Grandpa's plate, then count them together. Builds estimating and counting. (Grandpa guessed 200 peas. There were 41.)
3. Pie fractions: let the kids cut the pie into halves, quarters, then eighths. Who got more, one half or two quarters? Builds fractions. Winner gets first pick of dessert.
4. The story chain: each person adds one sentence to the story of the turkey that got away. Builds storytelling and listening. (In our version, the turkey booked a flight to Florida.)
5. Thank-you leaves: everyone writes one thank-you on a paper leaf and hangs it up as the table decoration. Builds writing and spelling. Everyone wins this one.

Here's something we hear from teachers all the time: tutoring works best when the tutor and the classroom teacher are actually talking.

Ilana, a certified teacher with 20+ years in Ontario and BC classrooms, explains how she does it. She asks the parents for permission to reach out to the teacher. Once the teacher knows she's there to help, not to judge, the teacher tells her the real picture: what's sometimes a problem, and what the child does really well.
