"If we know our stories, we should share our stories," shared former Ontario Attorney General and leader at Institute for Canadian Citizenship, Yasir Naqvi, during our Speaker Series today during the discussion on how rural communities can address systemic/historical racism to create more welcoming spaces for newcomers.

Being a welcoming community means focusing on creating connections between newcomers and established community members. This can help in eliminating barriers to social and economic integration and addressing racism and discrimination.

Swoop Media is celebrating 5 years of operation this year and I can’t help but reflect!

The first graphic recording I did was with With Chéla Inc. at a tiny community centre in Killaloe, ON in 2018. I remember that morning so well. After parking my car I entered a coffee shop and was greeted by eyes of the “regulars”. Coming from the city it was an odd feeling, but that was quickly washed away with the kindness of the small business owner. The oatmeal muffin and coffee was delicious and perfect for the nerves!

Then 3 years later to this past March where I had the opportunity to graphic record for SheEO and I had the Prime Minister on my screen - what!? I was SO nervous that day I had a dance party in the kitchen before and after to shake it off!

The first 2 years of Swoop were dedicated to Social Media and content creation out of necessity. I had just moved to Petawawa and had to find a way to make some income alongside part-time jobs. I still longed to illustrate as that was my true passion and it lead me to the world of graphic recording which is now my main service.

I still pinch myself to be able to do what I do. Thank you to all who have supported me on this roller coaster so far, wouldn’t be where I am today without you! 💕

Often I receive emails on confusion with the visual world. There's a lot of industry-specific mumbojumbo that can leave anyone feeling more confused than ever.

With my work as a graphic recorder, it’s not my job to replace text. I’m there to help emphasize the meaning behind words, or to add tone & context. One fun game that graphic recorders love to play are ! We pick random words then proceed to all draw out that word and compare what we did. It’s fun to see the variety of ideas, but also to see if maybe we are stuck in a certain icon (like magnifying glass for focus). So here is , a fun word to say, and a fun word to draw!

New Blog Post!

Why use infographics? In the midst of today’s screen-heavy world, we may feel ourselves gravitate to a book, pick up paper and pens or fiddle with the lego that the kids left all over the floor. I find this extremely fascinating on a human level, it seems like our bodies are telling us something.
