This year – especially this summer - has nudged me toward my Canadian side, and it’s showing up in the things I make.
Maybe it’s the world feeling chaotic.
Maybe it’s the news.
Maybe it’s just a wave of patriotic pride that a lot of us seem to be feeling.
So this September, I’m sharing a few Canadian‑themed pieces — journals, prints, magnets — tiny things that feel like home and make people smile.
I think I’ve officially entered my maple leaf era.

People often assume designing a birthday card is quick: write something funny, add a cute illustration, done.
For me, it’s different and funnier:
I write many versions of a line before I find the one that feels “just right”
I test the humour out loud (yes, alone in my studio) and on my husband
I tweak spacing until the words breathe
I adjust colours until the card “feels just right”
It’s not quick. And it’s thoughtful.
And it’s one of my favourite parts of being a maker. If you love seeing how things are made, stay tuned — Friday’s post shows the full journey from scribble → final card.

Sometimes you get a text that totally delights you-and surprises you.
A client texted me this a few weeks ago. It was a joy to see my “Canadian and Proud of It” journal at Bon Echo Provincial Park. With Mazinaw Rock as the background, no less.
I love this photo, and I appreciate her thoughtfulness in sending me this photo.

One of my favourite parts of markets is meeting artists whose work sits at the complete opposite end of the creative spectrum from mine.
If you want sassy, sarcastic, and a little bit “tell‑it‑like‑it‑is,” well… you know where to find me.
But sometimes you need soft and sweet.
And that’s where Handmade by Sue comes in.
Her work is gentle, heartfelt, and full of kindness — the kind of art that makes you smile without even realizing it.
I snapped these photos back in May because I wanted to remember the moment: two makers, two totally different styles, both creating from the heart.
Ottawa’s creative community is full of gems.

Sending a card in the mail is a wonderful, thoughtful action. But it DOES require some planning. Here’s a short checklist to get it done:
• a card 😀
• their mailing address
• a stamp
• one honest sentence

That’s it.
Small effort, big impact.

Sharing this story from a few months ago. To me, it's the connections that matter. That young man truly made my day when he chose to buy my journal to surprise his fiancé.
That's when my designs & this job truly bring me joy.
I hope they are enjoying a magnificent honeymoon .

There’s something special about milestone birthdays — 40, 50, 60, 70.
They make us pause. They make us reflect.
And they make us appreciate the people who show up with laughter, love, and a really good card.
If someone in your life is hitting a milestone soon, send them something that feels like them.

If you want a gentle August read, it’s waiting for you.

Ah, the height of summer: August is here. I don’t know about you, but this season has been a strange one — wild weather, surprise storms, and a general sense of “what is even happening?” I hope the Canada Day chaos didn’t hit you too hard. But weird summer or not, August always brings one ...
