Here’s how to change that:

1. Ask and listen.
Don’t just assign tasks. Check in: “How are you feeling about your role?” or “Is there anything you’d like to share?”

2. Acknowledge their opinions.
When volunteers offer ideas or feedback, respond, let them know you heard them.

3. Involve them in decisions.
When possible, invite volunteers to give suggestions on projects and plans. It shows you value them, not just their time.

But when you give them too many tasks without rest, it drains them.

Eventually, some volunteers quit because they’re too exhausted to keep going.

As a nonprofit leader, watch for signs of burnout. Check in often. Appreciate their work. And if they’re tired, encourage them to take a break.
