⸻this weekend an arctic blast in Ontario will be keeping the team inside. Services to resume next week!
❄️ Extreme Cold Alert – What This Means for Your Roof ❄️
With one of the coldest air masses of the winter settling into Ontario this weekend, we wanted to share a quick but important update about what’s happening on roofs right now.
When temperatures plunge like this:
• Snow on roofs does not melt evenly
• Heat escaping from homes can cause partial melting near the roofline
• That melt refreezes, creating ice dams
• Ice dams trap water, forcing it back under shingles and roofing materials
The tricky part?
Many homeowners don’t see a leak right away. Damage often shows up later in winter or early spring, when temperatures rise and trapped water finally finds a way inside.
⚠️ Important to know:
• Even if snow has slid off metal roofs, ice may still be building underneath or along edges
• Shingled roofs with lower pitch are especially vulnerable
• Ice dams are often heavier and denser than they appear from the ground
Cold stretches like this actually increase risk, because the freeze–thaw cycle becomes more aggressive once temperatures fluctuate again.
✅ What homeowners can do now:
• Watch for large icicles, thick ice at eaves, or uneven snow lines
• Check attic insulation and ventilation if possible
• Address ice buildup before interior damage appears
If you’re unsure what’s happening on your roof, a professional assessment can help prevent much bigger issues down the road.
Stay warm, stay safe — and don’t ignore what’s happening above your head.
