Planning your first trip to Toronto? There are a few things that are good to know before you start filling up the itinerary.

And you probably don't need a car. Three days gives you enough time for a solid first visit (although four or five gives you room to explore beyond downtown). And when you're choosing where to stay, don't automatically default to the Financial District just because it's central. The Annex, King West, Leslieville and other neighbourhoods can give you a very different experience of the city.

Save this one for when you start planning.

Most people visit Toronto Islands the same way.

They take the ferry to Centre Island, spend a few hours there, then head back to the city.

There's nothing wrong with that.

But after reading through everything and mapping out the day, it became pretty clear that the islands are at their best if you experience all three.

Start with the first ferry to Ward's Island while it's still quiet. Walk across to Hanlan's Point before the beaches fill up. Stop for coffee, take your time, then spend the afternoon around Centre Island before finding a spot to watch the skyline as the sun starts to set.

It turns a nice afternoon into a full day that feels much less rushed.

If you're planning a trip to Toronto, this is one worth saving for later.

One of the best parts of visiting a city is discovering the places locals actually spend time.

That might mean wandering through a neighbourhood you've never heard of, finding a quiet viewpoint instead of waiting in line for an observation deck, or spending an afternoon at a greenhouse, market or café.

In this guide, we've collected a few ideas that can help you experience Toronto from a different perspective.
