Restoration on a 1977 Yamaha CR-2020 receiver, a total beast packing 105w of power per channel. With great power comes great heat output, and these units unfortunately were known to blow up. Unbeknownst to the owner, this unit definitely exploded at some point in the past and was unfortunately fixed up by a real hack - and now I had to save it (seems to be the theme of 2026).

Power and main amps were recapped (with a grossly overpriced and under specced ebay kit which I would highly recommend against). The lytic board ended up having a hold burnt through it because the previous shop ignored the service warning to upgrade the resistors. This was restored with some clever use of silicone, kapton tape, solder, and high end resistors. New transistors were also installed and the lights redone. (Note: They aren't this green in real life, my camera just really boosted that hue for some reason)

Glad it was saved in the end because I nearly had 8 heart attacks taking this apart and finding a new fire to put out (literally) every day.

Yamaha C-70 preamp in for some restoration. These were made around 1981-83 and from what I've seen now, have a recurring issue with the phono section.

Inside we can see the phono amp completely blown out with leprosy, caused by a blown cap. Underside was worked on by a total pig who left flux everywhere. Whatever, it'll all get fixed up.

VR Amp was fitted with Nichicon MUSE ES bipolar audio caps, and the adjacent MM phono amp got stripped down, new KOA resistors, new ZPD27B zener diodes, and some more Nichicon MUSE and KW audio caps. The DC servo board was powered by Rubycon ZLH series (the best), and the board itself fit with Nichicon UDB and Illinois Capacitor bipolar crossover caps. The power supply was also stripped down and given more of those Rubycon ZL series, and Panasonic FR (and some Kemet R82s for the .22uf parts).

The owner also had a problem where audio would cut out when the tone section was bypassed, and that was knocked out in the servicing phase, and the switch itself reflowed to the board for better stability. Voltages were also dialed in after some playing time, and now it should last many more years.

Restoration / Upgrade on a 2006 Paradigm Ultracube 10 subwoofer. Client said his unit was crapping out with the power light flickering, indicating some sort of voltage crash going on. These units were made with CapXon brand capacitors which were apparently part of the 'capacitor plagues' of the early 2000s. A tech on youtube mentioned similar symptoms in a fix he was doing (linked below) that he blamed on the caps, so a shotgun recap was our shot in the dark to bring this thing back to life.

Out went the CapXon caps and in were Nichicon FR in both the power supply and control board for reliability. We went a step further than the tech on youtube and upgraded the main filter cap to a Nichicon UGW, a high quality, low ripple beast which blows the OEM part away and hopefully contributes to punchier bass in the end. I also sprinkled in a Nichicon UKW audio cap on the crossover because I can't help myself.

Now it's booming again.
