Single Pane of Glass (Single Pane View or Single Pane of Management Control) is the goal of several IT Operations Managers. It integrates all parts of heterogeneous and or homogenous IT systems.

A Cloud Computing Console such as Azure Portal, Google Cloud Console are good examples of Single Pane of Glass. These GUI tools gives ‘one view’ for virtual machines, storage, network, development tools and other.

Good luck in your Container Journey!

Just reaching out to my network to see if an expert can help a friend for few hours to troubleshoot a technical issue. They will pay for the hours.

* Environment: Kubernetes, Docker, Java, Java Kerberos and Kinit

(kinit is used to obtain and cache Kerberos ticket-granting tickets.)

The environment has two containers in a Pod.

* Application Container: Java Application that has integrated authentication via Java Kerberos.

* Sidecar Container: Kinit

* Issue - They can able to create a ticket in the Sidecar Container but the Java application (from the Application Container) refuses to read the ticket.

I know one person may not be able to troubleshoot all. As long the interested person knows Java, Kerberos Authentication and Kinit, the friend can handle Docker/Kubernetes part.

Please let me know if you can help or someone in your network.

Containers have become a core platform in the IT architecture.

Containers offers immutable infrastructure with predictable, repeatable, and faster development and deployments.

With these capabilities, Containers change the way applications are being architected, designed, developed, packaged, delivered, and managed.

But the very strength of containers can become its weakness. It is possible to create containers that are not needed for the business. A technical debt.

We have few challenges:

*How does one manage thousands or even tens of thousands of containers?
*How do you control the ephemeral containers that have lifetimes of a few seconds to minutes?
*How do you optimize resource utilization in a large-scale containerized environment?

The answer is Kubernetes.

Many enterprises adopting Kubernetes realize that Kubernetes is the first step to build a Cloud Native application.

Seven business reasons for adopting Kubernetes:

* Speed to Market
* Road to Digital Transformation using portable Containers
* Improved app development deployment using Infrastructure as Code methodologies
* Cost optimization
* Scalability, Availability and other ‘lities’
* MultiCloud, Hybrid Cloud and On-Premise
* Seamless migration to Cloud

What is ReplicaSet?

A ReplicaSet's purpose is to maintain a stable number of replica Pods running at any given time in Kubernetes. It is often used to guarantee the availability of a specified number of identical Pods in Kubernetes Cluster.

A ReplicaSet is defined with fields indicating:
* How many Pods should be maintained
* Pod template specifying the data of new Pods for replication criteria

Kubernetes cluster is a set of nodes for running your containerized applications.

Every Kubernetes cluster will have at least 1 master node and 1 worker node. The master node is responsible for maintaining the overall cluster in a desired state based on the configuration, and worker node runs the containerized applications.

Key Advantages of Kubernetes cluster:
• Schedule and host containers across a group of physical or virtual machines in On-premises or Cloud
• Containers in Kubernetes are not tied to individual machines
• Scale horizontally

How to mitigate the risks and vulnerabilities associated with transitioning into a Container architecture by using one of the fastest open-source orchestration tool, Kubernetes (K8S)?

Few recommendations:

1. Image used in building the containers has to be updated, for latest security patches.

2. Container Image registry has to be kept in the private network and enable monitoring to ensure that host server of the registry is secure.

3. Container Run Time has to be monitored for application security.

4. K8S has RBAC capabilities; Hence controls should be imposed on users.

5. Harden the OS.

K8S provides security advantages, like application containers are not patched— instead, container images are replaced entirely with new versions. This immutability feature enables strict version control and permits rapid rollbacks if a vulnerability is found in the new version of the code.

Hence, it’s best to invest time and effort to learn K8S Security.

We at RedPeppy have created CKA/CKS courses to learn them in the hard way.

What is Cloud Native?

Cloud Native is a methodology of building and running applications that fully exploits the power of Cloud computing, which offers OnDemand limitless computing power.

Features of Cloud Native Applications:

• Microservices
• Containerized
• CI/CD DevOps

Containerization allows applications to be “written once and run anywhere.”

As more containers are used, an enterprise needs an Orchestration tool such as Kubernetes that is mainly used for automating, deploying, scaling and management of Containerized applications.

I started leaning towards Kubernetes Operator recently as it is the future for Cloud Native deployments.

A Kubernetes Operator manages Infrastructure, Applications and Operations all together. They repeat software install, upgrade, constant health checks, encapsulate operational knowledge and share the accumulated knowledge with human users and applications.

The OperatorHub is open to all Cloud Native providers who want to publish their product operators.

In Red Hat OpenShift world, It is important to understand the capabilities and features of Red Hat Catalog, Red Hat Market Place, OpenShift Image Registry Operator, OperatorHub and Container Registries such as Quay.

The success of your OpenShift Container image pipeline is dependent upon the above tools.

Here’s my old yet new article about Kubernetes Operators.

I will write about Kubernetes Operators from Red Hat OpenShift perspective soon. Stay tuned.

My upcoming ‘Red Hat OpenShift Fundamentals’ course emphasizes the importance of Kubernetes Operators.
