That "free upgrade" call was a scam.

Monday morning: your telecom provider calls with a loyalty deal — a free upgrade for staying with them. You hand over your account details. Days later, a brand-new phone shows up at your door, exactly as promised.

Then the second call: "We shipped the wrong model." They email a prepaid return label — or a QR code — and tell you to send the phone back.

That label is the scam. The phone was real, ordered on YOUR account, so the bill is real too. Only the "return" is fake.

The 3-step rule if anyone calls you about a return:
1. Never use a return label or QR a caller sends you.
2. Start the return from your own account portal — or walk the phone into a store.
3. Hang up, and call the number on your bill.

Comment PHONE below and I'll DM you the return-scam checklist.

Your customer data just leaked.

Monday morning: a staff member opens an email they shouldn't, or someone logs in from a computer you don't recognize. By lunch, customer names and emails are in the wrong hands. Usually it starts with a hacked login, a laptop left logged in, or an ex-employee whose access never got turned off.

If this happens to you, the first hour is everything:
1. Contain it — take the affected device offline. Don't delete anything.
2. Lock it down — change passwords from a clean device, starting with email and banking.
3. Assess and record — what data, whose, how sensitive? In Canada, if the breach creates a real risk of significant harm, you must notify affected customers as soon as feasible and report it to the federal Privacy Commissioner.

Comment BREACH below and I'll DM you the first-hour checklist.

That deal is a fake store.

You're ordering office supplies or early gifts, and a sponsored ad shows the exact item for half price. You click through, the site looks perfect, you check out — and the package never comes. Or worse, the site captured your card details.

Canada's Cyber Centre just warned that scammers are using AI to build fake storefronts, checkout pages, and ads that look completely professional — right ahead of the holiday shopping season. Typos and blurry logos used to give fakes away. Not anymore.

3 checks before you pay:
1. Price — $1,500 headphones for $150? Too good to be true.
2. Address — don't click the ad. Type the store's real address yourself.
3. Payment — e-transfer, gift card, or crypto? Real stores never ask.

Comment SHOP and I'll DM you the 60-second safe-shopping check.

Your bank will never ask for this.

It's 4:45 PM, you're wrapping up invoices, and a text says your business account is locked — "tap to verify." Caller ID shows your bank's name. It feels real.

It's not. Canadians reported losing $704 million to fraud in 2025, a record high (Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre), and much of it starts with a fake call or text borrowing your bank's name.

3 rules that stop it:
1. Your bank will NEVER ask for passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or remote access by call, text, or email — this is the Canadian Bankers Association's core fraud-prevention message.
2. Hang up. Call back using the number on the back of your card, or open the bank app directly. Never tap the link.
3. Urgency is the trick. A real bank will never penalize you for taking two minutes to verify.

Comment BANK and we'll send you our 2-minute bank-scam check.

3 places small businesses leak customer info — without realizing it.

It's Small Business Week, and Cyber Month Week 3: Protect your information. The quiet leaks aren't hackers breaking in — they're everyday habits.

1. Passwords passed around — group chats, sticky notes, one shared doc everyone can see.
2. Customer info in spreadsheets — names, phone numbers, invoices emailed around, saved on personal laptops.
3. No second step on money accounts — banking, accounting and email guarded by a password alone.

Fix it: one login per person, MFA on banking, accounting and email, and customer info in the business system only.

Comment PROTECT and we'll send you the 5-minute check.

Don't scan that QR code.

You're out on a job, you stop to pay for parking, and the meter has a QR code. You scan it without thinking — that's the whole point.

Scammers are pasting their own QR codes over the real ones on parking meters and pay stations. The fake page looks real — until your card details are gone. The same trick shows up in fake invoice emails: a QR code instead of a link, so filters miss it and your phone opens a fake login page.

In September, the FTC warned about QR-code scams in public places, including parking areas. This summer, police in B.C. warned about fake stickers on parking meters — one driver lost $2,000.

3 checks before you scan:

1. Preview the link — your camera shows the address before you tap.
2. Look for a sticker over a sticker.
3. Go around it — open the app you already use or type the address yourself.

Comment SCAN and we'll send you the 60-second QR safety checklist for your team.

She left 3 months ago. She can still log in.

A good employee moves on — farewell lunch, handover notes, laptop returned. Everyone assumes the accounts are closed. But her email still works, her cloud files still open, and the shared passwords she knew still unlock the same tools.

A 2026 survey of nearly 1,800 IT professionals found 38% of organizations leave former staff with access they should have lost.

Close the door in 3 steps:

1. Day 1 — Disable accounts. Sign out everywhere.
2. Week 1 — Change shared passwords. Remove from shared folders and groups.
3. Month 1 — Check sign-in logs. Collect devices. Remove email forwarding rules.

Comment ACCESS and we'll check who still has access to your business — and close the gaps.

You pay for fast internet. So why is your Wi-Fi slow?

A frozen video call, a file that won't load — most owners blame the plan. Usually it's the setup:

1. Router in the wrong spot — closet, corner, or behind metal.
2. Too many devices sharing one signal.
3. Old router, old firmware, or interference nearby.

Fixes you can do today: move the router central, up high, out in the open; test with a cable (if wired is fast, Wi-Fi is the problem); restart, update firmware, disconnect devices you don't use.

Comment WIFI and we'll check what's slowing your Wi-Fi — and what would actually fix it.

Your laptop died this morning.

No quotes, no invoices, no client files, no email history. For a lot of small businesses, one machine holds everything.

Use the 3-2-1 rule:

1. 3 copies of your files — the one you work from, plus two backups.
2. 2 different kinds of storage — e.g. an external drive AND the cloud.
3. 1 copy kept off-site — so a fire, flood, theft, or ransomware doesn't take every copy at once.

And test the restore. A backup you've never restored from is a hope, not a plan.

Comment BACKUP and we'll check what you actually have protected.

Your office PCs stop getting security fixes today.

Today is the last update day for Windows 11 version 24H2 (Home & Pro) and Office 2021. After today, Microsoft stops sending them security updates. Your PCs keep working — but every new flaw stays unpatched.

What to do:
1. Check your version: press Windows + R, type winver, hit Enter. If it says 24H2, that PC needs the update.
2. Update on your schedule: Settings → Windows Update → Download & install.
3. Sort out Office 2021: it also loses security updates today. Move to Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 — don't keep running it unpatched.

Comment UPDATE and we'll check your office PCs and handle the update for you.
