Writers West

Writers West News, events for and about writers in British Columbia and beyond. There are no annual dues, no executive officers. We are non-hierarchical and self-organizing.

Writers West is a cyber-community of writers in western Canada and beyond sharing information about issues affecting our lives and livelihoods – copyright laws and violations, eBooks, new technologies, Access Copyright, library digitization of books, and more. All writers anywhere are welcome to join our Listserv where these writer-related issues are discussed. Just email your name plus a couple of sentences about what you write to [email protected] . WRITERS WEST REUNION & Potluck Social at Gabriola Commons July 11, 2015 !!

Have you been missing our vibrant Writers West summer gatherings of bygone years at The Commons on Gabriola Island? Well so have we! So the stalwart team that launched Writers West in 2009 decided it is time for a reunion of the tribe and a potluck social. This will also be a farewell party for Katherine Gordon and her partner Marc Bombois, who will be moving to New Zealand in the fall.

DATE: Saturday, July 11, 2015

TIME: 2:00-6:00 pm

PLACE: Gabriola Commons, 675 North Road, Gabriola
Island, BC

COST: $5 per person (to cover hall rental)

WHAT TO BRING: Potluck dish to share, BYOB, musical instruments, a few of your books for our book table. (Depending on number of authors, we may need to limit each author to 2 titles apiece.)

FERRIES: Ferry to Gabriola leaves from downtown Nanaimo, behind Port Place Mall. It is a 20-25-minute crossing, and then a short drive to the Commons. The 1:10 pm ferry gives you plenty of time to get there, get your dish in the kitchen and books on the book table, so we can start our circle at 2:00 pm. There is a 6:40 pm ferry off Gabriola Island (and also earlier ferries).

FERRY SCHEDULE: http://www.bcferries.com/schedules/southern/nhgi-current.php

RSVP: Not necessary. Just come. We’re trying to keep this simple!

PROGRAM:

This is not a formal business meeting like we have convened in past years on Gabriola (2009-2011). But there is a modest game plan. Times are approximate.

2:00 – Circle of Introductions: Say a few words about your latest project.

2:15 – Brief reports on:

a) The May 22 ruling of the Copyright Board of Canada that will reduce Access Copyright income and thus author income from AC.

b) The recent joint annual conference of The Writer’s Union of Canada (TWUC) and League of Canadian Poets (LCP) this May in Winnipeg.

3:00 – Adjourn for socializing, book table, hors d'oeuvres, drinkies.

4:00 – Potluck

5:00 – Music, merriment, more socializing

6:00 – Clean-up & depart

See you there!
