Beware of emails coming from "Canada Revenue Agency" We are seeing these get through and they can be a scam. Look at the return address and you will see it comes from some weird address.

Below is a example of a well crafted phishing scam. This is not from us as you can see from the return address. We block a ton of these garbage emails but still some get through. Do not click these links and never type in your password to verify your account. If you are ever concerned about your account ..pop me an email [email protected] or just give us a call :)

It has been a while since I posted on here.. admittedly not the best facebooker. I just want to say to everyone... do not let people on your computer unless you are absolutely sure who they are. I have had several clients fall victim to scams lately.

When in any doubt please feel free to reach out :)

Remember it is what these "bad actors" (trying to avoid profanity on here) do all day long.. so dont beat yourself up..if you feel you are being scammed shut your PC off and call a local person for help.

We see at least a few times a month where people come to us with a failed hard drive and have ended up losing all their pictures and keepsakes. It is always a good rule to keep all your data in 2 physical locations. External hard drives although are seemingly convenient they still fail and if all your data is on it often it is not recoverable. There are many online backup options including ours. We absolutely recommend using one :)

Our Online backup is local and not on the cloud which alot of people fear, and also your data is fully encrypted and locked by a passphrase you choose.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need advice :)

5 GENERAL TIPS TO AVOID ONLINE SCAMS

Do not give money or personal information to someone on the Internet whom you have never met in person.

Do not trust anyone that will not video chat or meet in person.

To verify if a person is who they say they are, use the photo from their online profile to do a reverse image search.

If a financial or government agency reaches out asking for money, do not respond and call that organization directly on your own to verify.

Use a password manager to create many passwords for your accounts. This way if they steal one, they do not have access to all your accounts.

If you are the victim of an online scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

If you are ever in doubt please reach out to us and we will help :)

Four Ways To Protect Yourself From Phishing

1. Protect your computer by using security software. Set the software to update automatically so it will deal with any new security threats.

2. Protect your cell phone by setting software to update automatically. These updates could give you critical protection against security threats.

3. Protect your accounts by using multi-factor authentication. Some accounts offer extra security by requiring two or more credentials to log in to your account. This is called multi-factor authentication. The extra credentials you need to log in to your account fall into three categories:

something you know — like a passcode, a PIN, or the answer to a security question.
something you have — like a one-time verification passcode you get by text, email, or from an authenticator app; or a security key
something you are — like a scan of your fingerprint, your retina, or your face
Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.

4. Protect your data by backing it up. Back up the data on your computer and phone. Contact us if you need help doing this :)

Have an old laptop that you love but it is kinda poky? One easy thing you can do is upgrade from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD drive. This will give your machine a real boost in speed. We have a machine that clones your old drive to your new drive so nothing changes but your laptop is faster and you have more space. This usually takes about an hour and the cost of the new drive.

Use a Pass Phrase instead of a Password

5 reasons why a passphrase is better

1. Passphrases are easier to remember than passwords. A random collection of numbers and symbols can be difficult to keep track of, which can mean that users often make it simpler to remember them. A passphrase is usually not as hard to remember.

2. Passphrases are difficult to crack through brute force. Many password-cracking tools work to break down 10-character passwords. Since passphrases are longer, they can be much more secure and safe from these tools.

3. Passwords are easily hacked by password-cracking tools and robots as well as by humans. People do not like to change passwords and tend to stick to things that they can remember, making them more easily guessed.

4. Most major applications and OS (operating systems) allow for up to 127 characters and the use of passphrases for optimal security.

5. A passphrase can easily satisfy complex rules and requirements for passwords, as most allow for punctuation and uppercase and lowercase letters.

Simple Examples:

I-Hate-Passwords
No-Way-I-Can-Remember-that!

You can add Special Symbols as well:

I-H@te-Pa$$words
N@-Way-1-Can_R3m3mber-Th@t!
