Aconcagua

In 1835, Charles Darwin looked up at Aconcagua and wrote a dry journal entry.

He was aboard the Beagle. He was in the process of quietly dismantling how the Western world understood life on Earth. He was standing at the foot of the mountain that an entire civilization considered a living God.

The Inca called their sacred peaks "Apus" or Lord's spirits, living deities with names and personalities. Aconcagua was among the most important in the entire Empire. Near its base, there was a temple. On its slopes, archaeologists have found the ceremonial offerings which serve as evidence of a people who climbed not to conquer the mountain but to speak to it

Darwin saw Rock and altitude. The Inca saw something that needed to be fed, honored and listened to.

The mountain hasn't changed

Citadel at Gozo through multiple iterations. The first model in white to get things to fit, then moving to color and multiple iterations for a good color match and a final product.

Gozo was sacked in 1551 and its population sold into slavery. The attack was so devastating that for over 80 years the citizens of the island would go to the citadel every night to sleep because of the fear of raids from the coast.

The model shows the citadel as it stands today in reaction to the Ottoman raid the people determined that it would never again fall to such an attack.

Before it was the Colosseum, this land belonged to one man: Nero. After the Great Fire of Rome in 64AD, Nero seized the site and built the Domus Aurea — the Golden House — a sprawling private palace complete with an artificial lake, gilded halls, and a 30-metre bronze statue of himself. It was, by every ancient account, an obscene monument to his own ego, built on land taken from the people of Rome.

When Nero fell and Vespasian rose to power, he made a calculated and symbolic choice. He drained Nero's private lake and built the Colosseum in its place — a public monument, open to every citizen of Rome, standing on the exact ground where an emperor's palace once excluded them. Where Nero had taken, Vespasian gave back.

Angkor Wat was the largest city on Earth in the 12th century. A civilization of 1 million people, an empire that stretched across Southeast Asia, and at its heart, a temple complex so vast it took 37 years to build and was dedicated to the gods themselves. The empire collapsed and was lost for centuries.
