Here’s a tip if you’re feeling stuck, burnt out, just are having a good ole mid-week existential crisis…

First, creativity ebbs and flows. Second, I’m gonna go ahead and make the bold claim that purpose also ebbs and flows.

It’s unrealistic to think you’re going to wake up, smash a cuppa Joe, and ride your unicorn-of-purpose into each day with pure glee.

Life happens, routines get sticky, and the motivation and excitement that accompany purpose start to call in sick, a lot.

So, here’s my tip for un-stucking yourself.

When you feel rudderless, or some version of murky, disrupt your programming. For a bit, take your to-do’s off the big scary pedestal you’ve place them on, create some space to be weird and not care what anyone thinks, and inspire yourself to enjoy a wee bit of chaos. In that disrupting, you’ll rediscover something like direction or purpose, again.

Your purpose is always within you, in your work and in your life, sometimes it just takes a bit of creativity to stir yourself into clarity and purposeful action.

Last thing I’ll say… Creativity doesn’t have to be a scary thing where you challenge yourself to reinvent the wheel or create a new medium of communication. Just cook. Dance like a weirdo. I know you have some funky moves.

Let's talk about finding that sweet spot where work and life harmonize, shall we? As a small business owner, brand designer, and cheerleader for conscious business, I'm all about following your path with intention.

Over the past couple of years, I've embarked on a journey to play the long game in my business,  striving to build a lasting and fulfilling career that is not separate from my life, integrated into the very fabric of my life. Maybe that sounds intense, but  I refuse to relive the chaos and imbalance of the past (let’s just say the burnout was real) – I'm creating  work-life harmony that keeps me energized, inspired, and ready to show up each day with creativity and gratitude, fostering stability for long-term success. ☕✨

Similar to design, where every element plays a crucial role in crafting a visually appealing masterpiece, the same holds true for our lives and businesses. Each decision, every choice, contributes to the beautiful tapestry of our unique journey.

Some ways I’ve created more harmony >
* Honoring my creative peaks and valleys. I can’t always be “ON”
* Creating workflows + processes that don’t stress me out
* Practicing healthy boundaries in business, like saying no to projects, so I can be 110% on the projects I take on.
* Letting go of the notion that I’m behind or not succeeding (was a sticky belief for me for a long time!).

So, here's to aligning with our values, embracing the sparks that make us unique, and weaving them into the fabric of our brand and life. 🎨✨

Now, get real with me - what's your secret sauce for creating harmony in work and business?

A sneak peak brand mark from a recent project 👀

Any guesses on what my client’s business is?

The cool thing about brand marks like this is they can be more abstract (or not literally indicate what the business does).

For this direction, the brand mark starts to tell the story of the brand through visual style.

We might not know a lot about the business, but we might say it’s polished, elevated, clean, perhaps luxurious, feminine or strong.

We could also take some information from the butterfly… perhaps this business values transformation or good fortune, which are things commonly associated with the butterfly.

Brand marks like this, and other brand elements outside your logo (colours, typography, use of grids, imagery, etc.) are super valuable in telling a larger story about your brand.

For example, here were not saying what the services are, but we’re designing a feeling and an experience for viewers to interact with.

Brand Identity > Logo Design

I’m a big advocate of designing brand identities over single logo designs.

Why?

You’re going to get more attention and ROI if you invest time and energy into creating a BRAND.

Internally this looks like messaging and positioning and much more.

Externally this looks like colours and layouts and photography direction and graphics and logos.

Having a strategic brand identity will spark connection and help people remember your brand (much more than a single logo will).

Also massive shout out to for being a wonderful biz partner, collaborator and friend. Check her out if you’re in need of a brand strategist that gets it!

I recently worked with Soulera (great name, right?) to create a brand for their amazing dance and entertainment company - something near to my heart as I danced for many years.

The owners wanted something that felt captivating, feminine, and classy. The end result was a simple wordmark with just the right amount of swoopy goodness.

My creative approach to brand design isn’t surface level.

I work with freelancers, solopreneurs, and small business owners, and typically I’m working directly with the owner of the business. I love listening to business owners describe their business, talk about what excites them, why they started, etc.

In fact, a lot of the questions I ask in discovery (and there are A LOT) don’t even seem related to visual design. They’re actually a lot more personal.

I like to fully understand the ultimate WHY of a business, not simply from a marketing perspective, but from an emotional, value perspective. Learning this kind of information allows me to create brands that are aligned’

What’s more, most clients say they feel clearer and more connected to their own brand after working with me. As much as visuals are hugely important, there are invaluable, non-visual benefits to having a professionally designed brand as well, like gaining clarity and feeling more connected to your own brand.

What's one of the biggest gains of having quality, strategic branding?

Here's the basic formula for branding = growth:

Branding that represents the real quality and experience of your business leads to big gains in confidence and excitement in your business and attracts your ideal clients... so you can reach the next level of your business.

One response I've received multiple times is pure excitement to dive into their business even more. Increased enthusiasm and confidence in what they're offering and a readiness to share.

Branding helps showcase what you've already got going for you, it just brings it all to the surface so YOU can see the value clearly, and your audience can see the value clearly.

Cool, hey?
