Coastal Byte has updated its service pricing and made it easier to ask for technical help.

Basic computer diagnostics are now a flat $50 CAD. This includes an initial inspection, common hardware and software checks, and identification of likely repair options.

If additional troubleshooting or repair work is needed, it is billed at $60 per hour only with your approval. Parts and specialized materials are separate.

Why SSDs Make Old Computers Feel New

Many older computers still use a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to store your files and Windows.

An HDD uses spinning disks and moving parts to read and write data, which makes it much slower than modern storage.

An SSD (Solid State Drive) has no moving parts and uses flash memory instead, allowing it to access data almost instantly.

The result?

- Faster startup times
- Programs open quicker
- Faster file transfers
- A more responsive computer overall

For many older computers, upgrading from an HDD to an SSD is one of the biggest performance improvements you can make, often making the system feel like a brand-new machine without replacing the entire computer.

Did you know that on many Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers, Shut Down isn't always a complete shutdown?

By default, Windows uses a feature called Fast Startup, which helps your computer boot (turn on) faster by saving part of the system state when you shut it down.

If you're troubleshooting a problem or your computer has been acting strangely, clicking Restart is often the better choice. A restart performs a more complete system refresh and can resolve many temporary software or driver issues.

It's a small difference that can make a big impact when diagnosing computer problems.
