SEGA CD MODEL 1 + GENESIS

A full resurrection on this Sega CD Model 1 and Genesis combo. The CD unit needed extensive board repair after capacitor leakage caused corrosion and damaged traces. Battery was removed and FRAM mod installed. The JVC drive was completely torn down, cleaned, re-greased, and fitted with a new belt. All boards were ultrasonic cleaned.

The Genesis received a full service with new voltage regulators, reset button, and DC jack.

Both AC adaptors were cleaned up and got new capacitors.

Not only is this stack running like it should, it's looking fantastic too. The plastics cleaned up beautifully. Ready for many more years of gaming!

Toshiba MW20F11 TV/VCR/DVD combo from March 2005 arrived completely dead, with a VHS tape trapped inside. Diagnosis revealed a blown fuse and a failing capacitor, both of which were replaced. No other faults were found during testing. The stuck tape was manually removed, the VCR heads were cleaned. The rear shell was washed, and years of dust and dirt were cleaned from the interior. Both the VCR and DVD player tested great afterward. The CRT is bright, sharp, and performing exceptionally well, this one has plenty of life left in it!

BALLY SOLENOID DRIVER BOARD AS-2518-22 (MAY 1980)

This board came out of a Bally Eight Ball pinball machine with a dead high-voltage section, resulting in the displays not working.

We replaced dead components in the high-voltage section, opened up and cleaned the relay contacts, reflowed a number of solder joints, and gave the entire board a thorough cleaning. We also replaced the original oddball fuse holder with a standard 5 mm x 20 mm holder. A little drilling was required to enlarge the mounting holes for the new fuse holder.

Nearly half a century after it left the factory, this board is ready for the next game.

SEGA GENESIS & CD MODEL 2 (1994)

A full teardown, cleaning, and repair for this Sega Genesis and Sega CD Model 2 setup.

The Sega CD received a thorough cleaning, switch service, and fresh grease on the drive. The Genesis needed repairs to the DC jack, 7805 voltage regulator, and reset button, followed by an ultrasonic cleaning to get the board and cartridge slot looking their best! AC adaptor capacitor was cooked and needed replacement too.

SEGA OUTRUN ARCADE BOARD (1986)

This classic came in filthy and needing some attention and upgrades.

Both boards were thoroughly cleaned, the EPROM legs were cleaned up, and all electrolytic capacitors were replaced. Seven EPROMs were then erased and programmed with Chris White’s enhanced OutRun code (2020), adding bug fixes, new features, and even new music. We made custom EPROM labels with the OutRun logo too.

We also installed a PCM filter bypass PCB made by Paris M, resulting in beautifully clear audio.

Nearly four decades later, OutRun is still an incredible game. Groundbreaking in 1986 and just as much fun to play today.

SEGA CD MODEL 1 (SEP. 1992)

Absolutely mint Sega CD! Despite some capacitor leakage and corrosion, it cleaned up beautifully. Fully recapped, FRAM upgraded, JVC drive serviced, new belt and grease, and ultrasonic cleaned.

It’s now running flawlessly and ready for many more years!

BATMAN 13” CRT TV – MODEL KSM6001 (2005)

This little Batman TV arrived with a pretty dark, dim picture. Interestingly, the owner said it was purchased brand new in the box and had never been used!

Our suspicion is that it may have left the factory this way, with the screen voltage simply set too low. After an adjustment and some testing, the picture looks much better: bright, vibrant, and ready for Gotham!

No other issues were found. The inside is absolutely mint and definitely looks like this TV has never been used.

And yes, we had to play Batman (SEGA Genesis) on the Batman TV. 😂

SONY KV-1926RA (1989)

A rare vintage television came in non-working condition. We replaced a blown fuse, reflowed faulty solder joints, and replaced eight worn-out capacitors. Decades of built-up dirt and grime were also cleaned away. Controls cleaned. Minor screen adjustments were made to optimize the picture.

Normally, television picture tubes of this age tend to be getting weak, but not this one! It tested strong, and we would expect many thousands of hours of life remaining.

Tested with the NES via RF, and honestly, it looks great! RF is how gaming was done in the 1980s and best represents how these games were originally played.

SONY KV-8AD10 (1991)

Another 8AD10 hit the bench this week for preventative maintenance. During inspection, we found a failing power supply capacitor that was close to taking the TV out of service.

The set received a complete teardown and deep cleaning. All dirt and residual flux were removed, controls and input jacks were cleaned, and the yoke was removed and properly reinstalled. We also dialed in the geometry with a fresh round of adjustments.

The result is a stunning picture. Sony's smaller CRTs consistently deliver an incredibly sharp and vibrant image!
