Passing the exam doesn't get you the Advanced certificate. That surprises people.
If you're going Advanced, there's an in-person flight review with a qualified reviewer after the written exam, using your own drone. A lot of pilots find that out after they've already passed and assumed they were finished.

Adam walks through the full path: ground school, the Transport Canada exam, the flight review, and the certificate itself, which comes from Transport Canada rather than from any training provider.

Ground surveys are slow, physically demanding, and put crews in tough terrain.
Pablo Crespell Montero and the team at College of New Caledonia are taking a different approach. Using drones, LiDAR, and handheld scanners, they're measuring canopy structure, volume, and wildfire fuel load from above.

"I've seen fantastic results. Faster, safer, and I'm optimistic we'll beat the accuracy of traditional field methods."

The aircraft is the least likely thing to let you down.

Before it leaves the ground there is a list. Where the base goes and how long it logs. Control placed against the shape of the site, not just its corners. The coordinate system checked rather than assumed.

Miss one and you find out back in the office, looking at a number that does not match the effort.

Most mining operations that bring in a drone use it for one thing. Usually mapping. Sometimes stockpiles. Then it stays there.

That is not a criticism of those teams. It is that a single platform can carry far more of the operation than most people expect, from the open pit down into the places a crew cannot safely walk.

Serguei has spent five years in the field with mining teams across Canada building these programmes. He has written up six things he is seeing drones do on sites right now, ordered by the weight they carry, and the sixth is one almost nobody has tried.
The sixth one involves a tunnel nobody had entered since the 1960s. More on that in two weeks.

📍 Burnaby, BC — LiDAR Mapping in Action

Our team was out capturing a full LiDAR survey of the Costco site in Burnaby, and the results speak for themselves.

From roadways and rail lines to rooftops and tree canopy, this reality capture gives an incredibly detailed, centimeter-accurate 3D model of the entire site — the kind of data that powers smarter infrastructure planning, asset management, and site analysis.

Big thanks to the crew for getting boots on the ground (and eyes in the sky) to make it happen.

Three questions we hear more than any others:

How fast can a team realistically deploy?
What does thermal give you that standard doesn't?
What does it take to add something new to a program we already run?

On Thursday we answer all three by walking through a mock search mission flown in wooded terrain. The mission is already captured, so what you're seeing is a real flight rather than a slide.

Setup and deployment. Pre-programming the flight for coverage and battery life. Swapping payloads. And what came back.

Ten years of flying experience doesn't replace a valid drone pilot certificate. 🚁
If your drone is over 250 g, Transport Canada requires the right certificate, and "I didn't know" won't stop enforcement.
