On 23 September 2026, the University of Botswana Social Work Society hosted young adults for a seminar titled “When Life Gets Heavy: Understanding Su***de, Emotional Distress and How We Can Get Help.”
The session created a safe, open space to discuss the pressures young people face — academic and work stress, financial difficulties, relationships, family expectations, loss, and uncertainty about the future — and the importance of seeking help when overwhelmed.
The programme featured a presentation by Ms. Ludo on “Social Media & The Law: What You Post, Share, Say & Its Impact on Mental Health,” exploring how online behaviour affects legal responsibility and mental wellbeing.
This was followed by an interactive panel with Dr. Lemme, Dr. Jeremiah and Mrs. Mawaba, who led a deeper conversation on changing the narrative around su***de — moving from silence and stigma to informed, compassionate support.
A candle lighting display and moment of silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives through su***de.
Participants left with practical tools to recognize when someone is struggling, start difficult conversations, and connect to appropriate support in their families, friendships, workplaces and communities
