๐ง๐ผ OMANG : - Does Your ID Expire?
Think about it!
You are still the same person at 29, 39 or 49 (read that 10yrs difference). Yet the document used to prove who you are expires, requiring another process of renewal, production and collection.
At Occiput Techs, we believe Digital Botswana presents an opportunity to rethink this model. Perhaps the future is not about producing better cards.
Perhaps the future is needing fewer cards altogether.
FROM PHYSICAL IDENTITY TO DIGITAL IDENTITY
Botswana should progressively move towards a secure, lifelong digital identity ecosystem, where a citizen's identity exists within an authoritative national system and physical cards become only one way of presenting that identity. Imagine opening a secure Botswana Digital Identity Wallet and accessing your:
๐ฑ Digital Omang
๐ Driverโs Licence
๐ Birth Certificate
๐ Marriage Certificate
๐ Vehicle credentials
๐ Government permits and licences, including KeeperID
๐ Verified professional or educational credentials
When something changes, the authoritative record is updated. Your driver's licence is renewed? Update the digital credential.
A permit expires? Its status changes electronically. You lose your phone? Your identity is not lost. You replace your device? Securely recover your credentials. This could significantly reduce dependence on printing, card-production equipment, consumables, physical collection and repeated replacement of documents.
DIGITAL ID- IS MORE THAN AN OMANG ON A PHONE
Putting a picture of an Omang inside an app is not digital transformation. A modern Digital ID should be secure and cryptographically verifiable. A bank, police officer, government department or authorised service provider should be able to verify:
IDENTITY VERIFIED โ
CREDENTIAL GENUINE โ
CURRENT STATUS: VALID โ
And they should only receive the information necessary for that particular transaction. That means designing for privacy, cybersecurity, interoperability, biometrics, controlled access, revocation and offline verification from the beginning.
AND NOBODY SHOULD BE LEFT BEHIND
Digital Botswana cannot mean smartphone owners only. Physical identification should remain available where necessary, particularly during transition, while assisted and offline verification ensures that citizens without smartphones or reliable connectivity can still access essential services. The objective isn't simply to eliminate plastic. It is to eliminate unnecessary dependency on plastic.
At Occiput Techs, our position is clear:
๐ง๐ผ Botswana should move from managing identity cards towards managing trusted digital identities and credentials.
Less printing.
Less unnecessary replacement.
Faster verification.
Better interoperability.
Stronger security.
Greater convenience for citizens.
Digital transformation should not simply take yesterday's processes and put them online. It should ask whether we still need yesterday's processes at all.
