📲 SIM Swap Attack Explained (How Hackers Take Over Your Number)

A SIM swap attack is one of the most dangerous scams today.
It allows attackers to take control of your mobile number—and once they have that, they can access your accounts.

⚠️ What Is a SIM Swap Attack?

A SIM swap happens when a hacker tricks your mobile carrier into transferring your phone number to a new SIM card they control.

👉 After that, your number stops working and the attacker receives your calls and OTPs.

🧠 How Attackers Do It (Step-by-Step)

1. Collect Your Personal Information

Name, phone number

Date of birth

Address (from social media or leaks)

2. Contact Your Mobile Carrier

Pretend to be you

Claim phone lost or SIM damaged

3. Request SIM Replacement

Convince support to activate a new SIM

4. Take Control of Your Number

Your SIM stops working

Attacker gets all calls & OTPs

🚨 What Happens After SIM Swap?

Once they control your number, attackers can:

Reset passwords of your accounts

Access banking or wallet apps

Bypass OTP-based security

Lock you out of your own accounts

👉 This can lead to financial loss and identity theft

🔍 Warning Signs of a SIM Swap Attack

Suddenly “No Signal” or SIM not working

Unable to send/receive calls or SMS

Unexpected OTP messages

Bank alerts or login attempts you didn’t initiate

👉 If this happens, act immediately.

🛑 What To Do Immediately

✔ Contact your mobile carrier and report SIM fraud
✔ Block your number temporarily
✔ Change passwords of all important accounts
✔ Contact your bank and secure your finances
✔ Enable extra security on accounts

🛡️ How To Protect Yourself

✔ Don’t share personal details publicly
✔ Set a SIM lock / PIN with your carrier
✔ Use app-based 2FA instead of SMS OTP when possible
✔ Avoid clicking suspicious links
✔ Monitor your phone signal regularly

⚠️ Reality Check

SIM swap attacks don’t require hacking your phone—
👉 They exploit human error and weak verification systems.
