A recent research, “Disinformation Targeting Female Political Figures in Bangladesh”, investigates how gendered disinformation is produced, circulated, and weaponised against female student activists in Bangladesh.

It highlights the dominant patterns of gendered disinformation during a heightened political situation. It reviewed 40 distinct fact-checked reports concerning 12 female student activists.

Between 2024 and 2025, at least twelve female leaders and student activists faced systematic disinformation attacks involving deepfakes, fabricated news reports, death rumours, and sexually explicit material falsely attributed to them.

কুমিল্লা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের (কুবি) গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগ ও সেন্টার ফর ক্রিটিক্যাল অ্যান্ড কোয়ালিটেটিভ স্টাডিজ, ইউনিভার্সিটি অব লিবারাল আর্টস বাংলাদেশ (ইউল্যাব)-এর উদ্যোগে “কমিউনিটি গাইড ফর ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং অ্যান্ড নিউজ ভেরিফিকেশন প্রসেস” নিউজ-ভেরিফিকেশন কর্মশালা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।

গত ২২ জানুয়ারি, ২০২৬ ( বৃহস্পতিবার) সকাল ১১ টার দিকে বিভাগের শ্রেণি কক্ষে আয়োজন করা হয়।

এই কমিউনিটি গাইডটির উদ্দেশ্য ছিলো ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং প্রতিষ্ঠানের উপর অতিরিক্ত নির্ভরতা কমিয়ে, স্থানীয় কমিউনিটি স্তরে আলোচনা ও সমালোচনামূলক পরীক্ষার মাধ্যমে সোশ্যাল মিডিয়ায় ছড়িয়ে পড়া তথ্য ও সংবাদ যাচাই করার সক্ষমতা গঠন করা।

এছাড়া আসন্ন জাতীয় নির্বাচনের প্রেক্ষাপটে কমিউনিটি লেভেলে ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং কীভাবে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে—তার ওপর সমন্বিত আলোচনা হয়।

এতে গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগের বিভিন্ন ব্যাচের ২৫ জন শিক্ষার্থী অংশগ্রহণ করেন।

শিক্ষার্থীরা ওয়ার্কশপে অংশ নিয়ে প্রস্তাবিত কমিউনিটি গাইডটি ভ্যালিডেট করে তাদের মতামত উপস্থাপন করেন এবং নিজেদের জন্য নিজস্ব ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং কমিউনিটি গাইড তৈরি করার প্রতিশ্রুতি ব্যক্ত করেন।

উল্লেখ্য, সিকিউএস-ইউল্যাবের এই গ্রাসরুট উদ্যোগটি দ্য এশিয়া ফাউন্ডেশনের পেরি প্রোগ্রামের অংশ হিসেবে বাস্তবায়িত হচ্ছে।

কাল কুমিল্লা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মিডিয়া কমিউনিকেশন এন্ড জার্নালিজম ডিপার্টমেন্টের ছাত্র-ছাত্রীরা আমাদের ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং কমিউনিটি গাইড ভ্যালিডেট করবে। একটি ওয়ার্কশপ সেশনে তারা তাদের মতামত জানাবে। নিজেদের জন্য নিজস্ব ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং কমিউনিটি গাইড তৈরি করবে।

এই কমিউনিটির গাইডের উদ্দেশ্য, ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং প্রতিষ্ঠানের উপর নির্ভরতা কমিয়ে নিজেই, নিজের কমিউনিটি স্পেসে, নিজেদের মধ্যে আলোচনার মাধ্যমে সোশ্যাল মিডিয়াতে ছড়িয়ে পড়া তথ্য ও সংবাদ যাচাই করার সক্ষমতা অর্জন করা।

আসন্ন জাতীয় নির্বাচনে কমিউনিটি লেভেলে ফ্যাক্ট-চেকিং কী করে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে, সে বিষয়ে আলোচনা করব আমরা।

সিকিউএস-ইউল্যাবের বিশেষ এই গ্রাসরুট উদ্যোগটি দ্য এশিয়া ফাউন্ডেশনের পেরি প্রজেক্টের একটি অংশ।

Connecting Communities: Empowering Bangladesh Against Misinformation.
This initiative brings together schools, journalists, youth groups, religious leaders, and local communities to build Bangladesh’s first community-powered defense against digital lies. Through grassroots fact-checking trainings, digital ambassadors, media helplines, and online early-warning systems, people across the country are learning how to verify information, resist manipulation, and stop rumors before they cause harm.

After attending our advanced fact-checking workshop, a faculty member from Women’s Model College in Sylhet shared her concern about detecting AI-manipulated content.

She learnt practical ways to verify information and used the hands-on lessons from the workshop. With AI misinformation becoming a serious threat in 2026, we are creating a community guide to help people spot AI content with misleading claims on social media.

This is how we are preparing communities to stay informed, resilient, and ready to respond.
