Seeing Architecture Differently: The Playful World of Robin Yayla 🎨🏛️
What if a famous building could become something completely unexpected?
Istanbul-born illustrator Robin Yayla combines photography and digital illustration to reinterpret iconic landmarks through playful visual transformations. Rather than simply documenting architecture, he looks for unexpected similarities between buildings, objects, characters, and everyday experiences—and turns those connections into imaginative scenes.
His illustrations transform familiar landmarks into something new while preserving enough of their original form to make the visual connection immediately recognizable.
One of his most memorable works transforms the flowing curves of the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku into Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress blowing in the wind. In another, the suspension cables of London’s Tower Bridge become Spider-Man’s web as he sits above the bridge.
Yayla's approach is particularly interesting from an architectural perspective because he treats buildings almost like graphic shapes. In his own words, a famous building can stop being simply an architectural object and become a visual element that can be reinterpreted through imagination.
