Bored Owl developed EDDIE—an Illawarra-built modular DAQ and fully engineered embedded system designed to get scientists and engineers measuring fast and innovating sooner.

Today I got to follow Jonathan into a meeting with the UOW CSIT student capstone group he is working with. They wanted to show a demo....so I had to capture it to share it with you!

To officially introduce the group, we are so excited to have Shobita Sutharshan, Ayan Deb Nath, Masaki Inoue, Araf Rahman and Chris Wai Hin Wong from UOW CSIT Group 12 working with Bored Owl.

In this latest update, the team is advancing our cloud data dashboard and synchronization ecosystem by implementing secure account management and seamless integration between local KAT environments and the server-side repository database.

Key highlights from their current progress include:
· Secure Account & Publishing Workflow: Establishing user authentication and account handling so developers can securely publish and manage code fragments and data in the central repository.
· Local-to-Cloud Integration: Connecting local experimental data and database files running on local servers directly with the cloud backend.
· Streamlined Data Tracking: Ensuring run descriptions, primary keys, and origin details are accurately monitored and transferred between local terminals and office servers.

Our aim is to create a system that is deliberately engineered for ease of use, security, and developer productivity.

That gap between having hardware and having data is where most embedded projects lose their first weeks. Bare metal is not the problem. Bare metal without an application layer is the problem. See new blog post in the comments section :)

Bare metal work has a way of consuming the early part of a project. Before anyone measures anything, there is low level code to write, a runtime to configure and a debugging loop that asks you to compile, flash and hope. For a scientist or engineer whose actual goal is a data set, that is a lot of overhead standing between the question and the answer.

Check out our latest blog post (link in comments) to learn more about where EDDIE starts from... and why it could remove friction from your work.

Let us know what you think in the comments :)

When you need a good inventory system, why not build it yourself. Make sure you watch this video to the end, then you can hear the inventory system talking to Jonathan Masters :)

Being able to load our own PCBs is an important part of the process of creating good hardware designs. We can make sure everything is just how we need it before finalising the design for manufacture. Nothing worse than finding something you wish you fixed when its too late to catch it.

Its great to have Rohan Harper as part of the Bored Owl team working with Jonathan on building boards and writing software for EDDIE and coming up with ideas for EDDIE applications :) We look forward to introducing more of our team over the next few weeks.

Would an A$50–75 entry into the EDDIE/K4 ecosystem interest you?

This is pocketEDDIE, a board I’m developing for students, educators and anyone who wants an affordable way to start experimenting with EDDIE and K4.

The idea is simple: a small card that lets you connect sensors, control hardware and explore your own projects, with room to connect to our wider Probe ecosystem.
At a target price of A$50–75, pocketEDDIE would offer:

• USB power or an external 7–21 V DC supply
• USB-C interface
• Arduino-like I/O at 3.3 V
• Selectable 3.3 V/5 V interfaces for I²C, SPI and two GPIO channels
• A Qwiic-style I²C connection
• An EDDIE-style CAN-FD interface, compatible with our Probe ecosystem
• Development through KAT on Windows, macOS and Linux

The image shows the current board design. Before taking it into production, I’d like to hear from the people who might use it.

Would pocketEDDIE appeal to you at this price? What would you want to build or learn with it?

If you’re a student or teach electronics, embedded systems or programming, I’d particularly welcome your feedback.

In the world of research, industrial monitoring, and field experimentation, getting high-integrity data out of a physical environment should be the easiest part of the job. Yet, for many scientists, researchers, and field engineers, it’s often the biggest roadblock.

Highlights from Bored Owl's visit to the SBRC (Sustainable Buildings Research Centre) today at UOW. Thank you Emily Yap and Steven Beltrame for organising the visit, we enjoyed meeting more of your colleagues and getting your feedback on Eddie's development.

Special mention to Rakshi Manohar who worked on the project with Jonathan, supervised by Dr Emily Yap from the SBRC. We missed you today Rakshi but don't worry we ate some cake for you ;)

Data acquisition in industrial and experimental spaces usually forces an exhausting compromise:
- Choose a rigid turnkey system that doesn't scale, OR
- Lock yourself into an incredibly complex, custom-programmed nightmare.
Bored Owl Pty Ltd is breaking that cycle with the EDDIE System Architecture. 🛠️📊
By paring a rugged, mistakeproof 4-tier hardware network with an incredibly lightweight, multitasking software stack (K4/RT), EDDIE allows engineers to deploy edge sensors, log environmental metrics, and spin up live control loops in record time.
