How much time and money gets wasted on site simply because people aren't on the same page?

Construction isn't short on experienced people. There are plenty of professionals who know their jobs inside out.

The challenge is getting everyone on the same page.

With so many people involved in a project, information gets missed, misunderstandings happen, and suddenly you're spending time and money fixing something that could've been avoided.

In the first episode of Built in Transit, Joey Hidalgo sits down with Shane to talk about one of the industry's biggest challenges: sharing knowledge across teams, businesses, and projects.

And more importantly, how technology could help make that easier.

We should stop treating training and employment as two separate worlds.

For the person learning, they are part of the same journey. People want to know what the skill means in practice, how employers will assess it and where it can take their career.

When training is disconnected from employment, expectations become unclear. Employers question readiness. Professionals struggle to translate what they learned into real workplace value.

A stronger pathway connects learning, assessment, industry context and opportunity.

The transition should feel deliberate — not like stepping from one completely separate system into another.

What would make the pathway from learning to employment easier in construction?

The best workforce pipelines are built, not found.

When a business waits until a role becomes urgent to start looking for talent, it is competing for attention at exactly the same time as everyone else.

A stronger approach is to build relationships earlier. Understand where future talent will come from. Develop internal capability. Stay connected to training providers, communities and professionals before there is a vacancy.

A pipeline is not a database of names. It is a system of relationships, information and readiness built over time.

The crisis is the worst time to start building it.

What does your future talent pipeline look like today?

Builders need capability, not just CVs.

A larger stack of resumes does not automatically make a hiring decision easier. In many cases, it creates more work without creating more certainty.

What matters is whether the person can actually operate in the environment, understand the expectations of the role and contribute at the level the business needs.

That requires better assessment, clearer role definition and stronger alignment between experience, readiness and opportunity.

Volume is not the same as quality.

The goal of recruitment should not be to send more CVs. It should be to create better hiring decisions.

What information do you wish you knew before interviewing a candidate?

“There will be opportunities to grow” sounds positive.

But professionals need more than a promise.

They need a path.

A clear career pathway explains what greater responsibility looks like and what capability someone needs to demonstrate before they can move towards it.

For an Estimator, progression might involve moving from defined takeoffs to owning complete tenders, managing subcontractor engagement, identifying risk and contributing to tender strategy.

For a Contract Administrator, it may involve stronger ownership of variations, forecasting, reporting and commercial relationships.

The exact pathway will differ between businesses.

What matters is clarity.

People should understand the standards expected at their current level and the capability required at the next one.

This helps employees take more ownership of their development.

It also helps managers have more objective conversations about progression.

Instead of “You are not ready yet,” the discussion becomes, “Here are the responsibilities you need to demonstrate consistently before the next step.”

That is better for both sides.

Career development should not be based entirely on tenure, and promotions should not be used simply as a retention tool.

Progression should follow increasing capability, judgment and responsibility.

Can your people clearly explain what they need to demonstrate to progress inside your business?

Better hiring starts before the job ad.

By the time a vacancy becomes urgent, many businesses are already operating under pressure. The role needs to be filled quickly, the project cannot wait and the hiring process becomes reactive.

Workforce strategy begins earlier. It means understanding future capability requirements, developing internal people, building external talent relationships and creating a pipeline before the vacancy appears.

A job ad should be one part of the hiring system — not the beginning of it.

The strongest businesses do not wait for a workforce problem before thinking about workforce.

Hiring the right person is only half the job.

The first weeks and months determine how quickly that person can become useful inside the business.

A good onboarding process protects the investment made during recruitment.

It gives the new employee clarity about the role, the projects, the systems, the standards and the people they need to work with.

Without that structure, capable people can spend unnecessary time trying to work out how the business operates.

What does a good first month look like?

Who should they meet?

Which processes need to be understood?

What work can they own immediately?

What should be reviewed before they operate independently?

How will feedback be provided?

These questions are especially important in construction because every business has different templates, commercial procedures, software, approval processes and ways of managing project information.

Onboarding should therefore be more than account setup and introductions.

It should create a clear path from new employee to reliable contributor.

Support matters, but so does accountability.

The person should know what they are expected to learn, what outcomes they need to achieve and when greater responsibility will be transferred.

A strong hiring decision can still fail when onboarding is weak.

How structured are the first 30, 60 and 90 days for someone joining your construction team?

Construction does not have a single workforce problem.

Shortage gets the most attention, but shortage is only one part of the picture. Capability matters. Retention matters. Readiness matters. Alignment between the role, the person and the business matters.

Hiring more people into a system that does not develop, support or retain them will not solve the underlying problem.

That is why workforce strategy has to go beyond headcount.

We need to understand where the real constraint sits before deciding what solution to apply.

Is your biggest workforce challenge finding people, developing them, keeping them, or making the right match in the first place?

Business growth creates workforce requirements before it creates vacancies.

If a construction company expects to tender more work, enter a new sector, increase project size or expand geographically, the capability required to support that growth should be considered early.

Future workload needs future capability.

That does not mean predicting every position perfectly.

It means understanding the direction of the business well enough to identify likely pressure points.

Will the estimating team handle the additional tender volume?

Does the commercial team have enough depth for larger projects?

Will existing project leaders be able to support more delivery teams?

Which roles take the longest to recruit?

Which capability can be developed internally before it becomes urgent?

Those questions connect workforce planning directly to business strategy.

Without that connection, companies can win work faster than their teams can absorb it.

The result may be rushed hiring, overloaded staff, inconsistent systems and senior leaders being pulled into operational gaps.

Growth should create opportunity, not uncontrolled pressure.

A workforce plan gives the business time to decide what should be recruited, what should be developed and what systems need to mature alongside the team.

When you look at your expected workload six to twelve months from now, does your current team have the capability to support it?

If your construction business is planning growth and wants to think ahead about workforce capability, send us a message.

A partnership should make the industry stronger, not just the brands involved.

It is easy to measure collaboration by reach, impressions, event attendance or logo placement. Those numbers can be useful, but they do not tell the whole story.

The bigger question is whether the partnership improved access, capability, information, opportunity or decision-making for the people the industry relies on.

Good partnerships create value beyond the two organisations signing the agreement.

If the only benefit is visibility, we are thinking too small.

Impact should be the measure.

What outcome would make an industry partnership genuinely worthwhile to you?
