Most finance teams treat July as the start of the financial year. But if you have got an AP process you have been meaning to fix, it is actually closer to a deadline.

Sign off a project now and you've got two full quarters of FY27 to show real savings against this year's targets. Leave it until Q3 and the benefits slide into the next reporting period, which, to a board, looks a lot like nothing happened.

Our CFO William Thompson wrote a piece about why July is genuinely the best window to do something about it and how to put together a business case that doesn't get parked.

According to a 2025 survey of mid-market finance leaders, 48% said they saw little to no cost savings from their AP automation tools. 🤔

Not because the technology doesn't work but because they only automated part of the process. Partial automation reduces cost at the margin. End-to-end automation changes the economics of the function entirely.

If you are evaluating AP automation, our teammate Rav Gomes has put together 7 questions worth asking any vendor before you commit - check it out.👇

Looking at automating your AP process? Here's what to ask AP automation vendors before you sign, including the questions they'd rather you didn't.

When did you last see AP processing as a line item on your cost review?

We are guessing never? Not because it is cheap but because the cost is invisible. It hides inside salary budgets, gets absorbed into overhead and compounds quietly across every invoice your business receives.

The ATO puts the average cost of processing a PDF invoice at $27.67. At 1,000 invoices a month, that's $336K a year your P&L isn't showing you.

We break it down exactly where it lives, i.e. labour, rework, missed early payment discounts, compliance exposure and show how to calculate your own baseline.
