In 2011, Marrickville in Inner West Sydney had 17.6% canopy coverage. Today, they sit at 19.7%. 🌳

Over the last 15 years, the suburb has seen 9686 new plantings.

These new plantings are forecast add 1.2% by 2036. Alongside growth from established trees, this will take Marrickville to 21.6% canopy growth.

Under the Urban Tree Canopy Off-set Scheme, last updated in May 2024, new homes in urban areas have to plant trees. 🌳

But in limited cases where planting a tree isn't feasible, an applicant can pay into a fund instead.

That money goes toward greening parks, reserves and nature strips.

A newly planted tree can take decades to deliver the canopy coverage of the mature tree it replaces. 🌳

New plantings are forecast to add a further 0.8% to Bondi Beach's total canopy by 2036.

On the current trajectory, this isn't enough to offset what's been lost through removals.

Sydney Water removed 5,800 tonnes of concrete from Johnstons Creek. What happened next? 🌳

Once an ageing concrete stormwater channel, the lower reaches of Johnstons Creek were transformed by Sydney Water into a more natural urban waterway.

The project included:

👉 Removing 5,800 tonnes of concrete
👉 Creating habitat for fish, crustaceans and other aquatic life
👉 Reshaping the banks to mimic natural saltmarsh processes
👉 Extensive native planting

But the real test comes years later.

Did the landscape actually get greener?

Our data shows that since 2011, total tree canopy along Johnstons Creek has increased by 3.6%. 🌳📈

This is why long-term monitoring matters.

It’s not just about what gets planted - it’s about what survives, what grows, what is lost, and whether these projects deliver measurable change over time.

Small patches of native bushland are popping up across Sydney.🌳

Two are taking root in very different corners of the city. In Sydney's north, Ku-ring-gai Council planted Sydney's first tiny forest at West Pymble.

Planted with critically endangered Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest, it's already shot up to 7 metres.

In the south-west, Campbelltown City Council, NSW planted almost 900 trees at Childs Reserve in Glenfield.
