What does it take to protect a river corridor in a fast-growing urban catchment?

On 20 January 2026, new planning controls came into force across the Werribee River corridor — turning long-standing protection of the river's canopy and vegetation into a permit requirement. 🌳

What recovery looks like from above. 🌳

After the 2018 Tottenham fire devastated Stony Creek, VIC - killing 2,500 fish and affecting 8km of waterway - restoration began.

This is one section of Stony Creek, VIC between 2011 and 2025.

👉 68 new trees were planted in this section alone.
👉 Canopy cover rose from around 14% to 43.85%.

For context: the average across Melbourne's Western Suburbs sits at just 5.5%.

It's the result of sustained work from Melbourne Water, City of Maribyrnong, the Environment Protection Authority Victoria, Friends of Stony Creek and the broader community. 🌳🌳👏

Bayside City Council has prepared a new development plan for the Beaumaris Concourse Green. 🌳 Beaumaris Concourse

However, Beaumaris Conservation Society has lodged a submission raising concerns about the scale of the works and the impact on the Green's natural character.

They're asking members and residents to support that submission when public comment opens.

Decisions like this show up in the canopy for decades. Watch Beaumaris Conservation Society for more updates. 🌳🌳

A green strip in Alexandra Parade, Fitzroy has been approved by Yarra City Council to be turned into a parking lot.

As part of the plan, trees and grass will be bulldozed, then the strip will be filled with concrete.

The statewide average tells you canopy is rising. The sector data tells you who's being left behind. 🌳

Viewbank, VIC. 📍

Government-managed land covers just over half of Viewbank but holds 66% of its canopy, growing at nearly three times the rate of private land.

The data shows what sustained stewardship of urban trees looks like.

But private land removals are running at double the rate of public, and private land holds a third of the suburb's canopy. Banyule City Council🌳🌳
