A luxurious voyage to the heart of the Inca Empire!

Riding on one of the worlds most luxurious trains finished in a classic 1920's style, the Hiram Bingham's journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu is one for the bucket list.

The ride takes just under 4 hours (one way), which is enough time to enjoy a few cocktails along with a freshly prepared authentic meal. The observation car gives you the perfect view of the Peruvian Andes, an enchanting journey through the valleys ending at the sacred Machu Picchu.

Named after the American explorer who re-discovered the Inca citadel, the Hiram Bingham launched in 2003 and is run by Belmond, which operates 46 luxury hotels, restaurants, tourist trains and river cruises in 24 countries. In 2019, LVMH bought Belmond for $3.2 Billion to increase its presence in the ultimate luxury hotel world.

By now, most of us (at least in Victoria) would have heard of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project.

SRL is a planned 90km orbital rail line traversing suburbs 15 - 25kms from Melbourne CBD connecting existing lines. The entire project is set to cost over $50 Billion by the time it is completed sometime around 2050 (if all goes well)!

This standalone line will use smaller, shorter trains running more frequently. Proposed modelling forecasts SRL to become the busiest line in Melbourne by 2051 with around 400,000 passengers per day.

What many of us don't know is that, this was not the first orbital rail line in Melbourne.

Around 130 years ago the 'Outer Circle', a ~20km rail line that ran from Fairfield through to Oakleigh was built. Unfortunately its life was short lived. By May 1897 the entire Outer Circle Line had closed after just 6 years from originally opening. Today part of the line serves as a walking and bike riding trail with the remainder running as the Alamein line.
