A Dutch designer has gone viral for building something straight out of a sci-fi protest — a transparent mask that completely blocks AI facial recognition from every angle.

Created by Jip van Leeuwenstein in 2017 at the Utrecht School of the Arts, the mask bends and distorts the face so heavily that recognition algorithms can’t lock on… yet people can still see your real expressions. It was part of a project called Surveillance Exclusion, aimed at exploring how ordinary people can push back against automated tracking.

The design spread across tech and privacy forums years ago, but it keeps resurfacing as facial-recognition cameras become more common — from airports to high streets.

What started as an art school experiment is now a symbol of the growing fight against an always-watching world.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, one of the brilliant minds behind VLC Media Player, gave the world something incredible. Despite being offered huge sums of money, he chose to keep VLC completely free and ad-free, putting users and community first over profit. Millions of us rely on it every day to watch videos, listen to music, and stream content without a hitch, all thanks to his vision and dedication. In a world where everything comes with a price tag, Jean-Baptiste reminds us that passion and generosity can change the game. A true hero of the digital age. 💻👏

Taiwan has achieved one of the most stunning technological milestones in history: computer chips so small that one million transistors can fit on the surface of a single human blood cell. TSMC has successfully created 1-nanometer chips, shrinking each transistor to about 20 atoms wide — the smallest ever made.

This leap is enormous. Today’s flagship phones use 3–5nm chips, so dropping to 1nm offers a 3–5× boost in computing density. That means smartphones up to five times more powerful, smartwatches with laptop-level performance, instant on-device AI, and batteries that last for weeks instead of days. Even advanced quantum-safe encryption could run directly on consumer devices.

To build chips this small, TSMC had to invent new manufacturing techniques such as ultra-precise extreme-ultraviolet lithography and atomic-layer deposition. At 1nm, quantum effects become unavoidable — electrons tunnel through barriers like they’re not even there — so engineers redesigned transistors to use quantum behavior rather than fight against it. Each factory costs around $30 billion, making it one of humanity’s most complex engineering feats.

Mass production begins in late 2026, with Apple, Nvidia, and AMD already reserving early capacity. According to TSMC and Nature Electronics, this breakthrough marks the beginning of a new computing era where devices become smaller, faster, and far more powerful thanks to technology operating at the edge of quantum physics.

Chinese researchers have created a revolutionary bamboo-based plastic that matches the strength and durability of conventional petroleum-derived plastics while being fully biodegradable.

The material is produced from bamboo cellulose nanofibers, which are chemically modified and combined with other natural compounds to form a high-performance bioplastic.

This innovative plastic exhibits excellent mechanical strength, comparable to traditional plastics like polyethylene or polypropylene, and can withstand high temperatures and significant stress without deforming.

Unlike regular plastics that persist in the environment for centuries, this bamboo version completely breaks down in soil within about 50 days through natural microbial action, leaving no toxic residue or microplastics behind.

The breakthrough addresses two major problems: dependence on finite fossil fuels and the global plastic pollution crisis. With bamboo being one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, the raw material is abundant, renewable, and sustainable.

Researchers believe this biodegradable plastic could replace conventional plastics in packaging, disposable cutlery, electronic casings, and many everyday products, offering a practical, eco-friendly alternative that maintains performance while dramatically reducing environmental harm.

🩹✨ Researchers at Aalto University and University of Bayreuth have created a hydrogel “superskin” that mimics human skin, healing 90% of wounds in 4 hours and completing repair within 24 hours, without stitches or scars.
Made from clay nanosheets and polymer networks, it’s strong, stretchable, and adaptive, with potential uses in burn recovery, smart bandages, prosthetics, and soft robotics. This breakthrough could replace traditional sutures for faster, scar-free healing.

What other applications can you imagine for a material like this? How do you think it might change medicine in the future?
