Hey kids, sh*ttest post I’ve ever had to make but my little dude Oscar pulled the old jailbreak yesterday afternoon. To make matters worse we weren’t even at home, we were at my girlfriend’s place in Oak Park and he got a fright and jumped the fence meaning he isn’t even on home turf.

If anyone is in that area it’d be great if you could keep an eye out, I’ve been up hunting for him literally all night. He’s an absolute scaredy cat who’s always lived inside 24/7 so I doubt he’ll be roaming, he’s more likely to be hiding in a shed or something.

If you could make the pain worth it that’d be great 😅

TECH TIPS TUESDAY 🧠

Wanna be smarter than 80% of solder jockeys out there? BAG AND LABEL YOUR GODDAMN SCREWS!

You cannot begin to imagine how much gear comes in with bolts/mounts that are stripped to hell, or without half the fasteners even present because some peanut couldn’t retrace their steps during a repair. It’s really not that hard.

Buy yourself a pack of ziplock bags. Organise the fasteners as you go and label the bags with a Sharpie. When you’re done reassembling wipe off the Sharpie with some alcohol and reuse them (I think I’ve been on the same pack for like 5+ years now).

No more scratching your skull trying to remember if the hex M3s were for the case or if that was the 1/8th Phillips.

TECH TIPS TUESDAY 🧠

Troubleshooting faults can be hard. Real hard. In the recent classes we had in the workshop one of the first steps I recommended was a thorough visual inspection. And I don’t just mean extreme signs of obvious explosions- have a little hunt for brown M&Ms (if you don’t get the reference google “Van Halen brown M&Ms”).

When f**kery is afoot there’s ALWAYS a sign. The wrong screws, the wrong fuse, or in this case loose connectors and a hundred dodgy solder joints in one area. Clearly a sign that someone was fishing for a fix. Thats instantly told me to look deeper, and sure enough this PCB had a big old crack in it.

Why is that remotely interesting? Because whoever was praying and spraying with the soldering iron was never going to see it until they took the 5 minutes to actually remove the PCB and check the other side. You could trace the issue for hours easily with all sorts of tools, but your lookballs can often find it in seconds.

All three faults that were plaguing this thing came down to that one crack, meaning I didn’t even need to turn on the test equipment once to solve them all. Work smart, not hard.

You know that saying “It ain’t stupid if it works”?

I disagree. This is kinda fu***ng stupid.

The lengths some people will go to avoiding doing the job properly are just astounding sometimes 🤦‍♂️
