31 October comes either way.

The folder you have not opened. The one summary standing in for four sources. Forty screenshots. A spreadsheet that ends in February. Sources nobody counted. Five different problems, and they all resolve the same way: one record, twelve months, every source, every fee, every line dated.

One file before the deadline.

Save this and start this week.

Same file. Two endings.

Ending A: hand it to your accountant. Every figure shown how it was calculated.
Ending B: file it yourself. Every disposal and cost base. You put in the final number.

One accountant package works for both.

Exchange B says $400 gain. What’s the real gain?

When you move coins to a new exchange, the new exchange doesn’t know what you paid. Its report may use the value on the day they arrived. Your cost base is still the original purchase.

Bought 1 ETH on Exchange A for $1,500. Moved to B when worth $5,000. Sold on B for $5,400. Gain: $5,400 − $1,500 = $3,900.

The cost base moves with the coin.

Twelve small drops. Twelve cost bases.

Cashback paid in crypto arrives as lots of small amounts. Each one is its own parcel, valued on the day it landed. If they aren’t recorded, the whole sale can look like gain.

Twelve monthly drops worth $84 in total when received. Sold for $120. Gain: $120 − $84 = $36.

Every drop gets a line.

How many disposals on this line?

Moving coins between your own wallets isn’t a disposal. The ETH you spend on gas to do it is. It’s small, but it has a cost base and a value like any other ETH.

Moved 1,000 USDC between own wallets. Paid 0.004 ETH gas, bought at $2,000 per ETH, worth $4,000 per ETH on the day. Gain on the gas: $16 − $8 = $8.

Gas paid in crypto is a disposal.

Lost the keys. The loss isn’t automatic.

Losing access to a wallet doesn’t create a capital loss on its own. To claim one, you need evidence that you owned the coins, what you paid, and that they can’t be recovered.

Bought 0.2 BTC for $8,000. Seed phrase lost. Evidence needed: purchase record, wallet address, proof of control, when and how it was lost, and that the coins haven’t moved since.

A loss needs a record behind it.

Free tokens still have a price.

An airdrop of an established token is income at its market value on the day you receive it. That value becomes the cost base when you sell.

500 tokens received at $0.40 each: $200 income. Sold for $350: $150 capital gain.

Value it on the day it lands.
