I’m calling this V2. Taking your feedback, I’ve made modes which lean closer to “edge of breakup”.

Designed to mimic the two stages of a low-wattage amplifier being pushed. Raw classic crunch, adding touch-sensitive rich harmonics.

The “Comp” mode switch gives three voicing options which make changes to the preamp and drive compression. This is more than just swapping out hard-clipping diodes.

The middle position gives mild Class-A style breakup. This could be edge-of-breakup for some pickups when dialed-in with the “Pre” k**b. But will, of course, drive harder for neck humbuckers etc.

In bottom “+” mode, the preamp is overdriven, and the drive stage adds a further layer of compression. The driving transistor uses an inductor connected to its emitter leg to make the saturation less sharp. And also to voice for thicker bottoms and mids. The power amp compression is simulated using the gate of field-effect transistors. This is unlike the trick where the internal body diode of a mosfet can be used for hard clipping.

The top “++” mode has the most crunch and aggression. Germanium is used to affect the compression asymmetry.

This is a less-is-more style circuit in terms of simplicity. Like classic valve amps, there is no buffer at the input. As such, you can expect a warmer response connected directly to the guitar, and a brighter response if placed after a buffered pedal.

Here we go again. This revisits a collaborative development with Shaun Klinger and Dazatronyx . This crossover completed a gap in both of our fuzz collections - the IC M**f. With a decade of good intentions to bring this design back, we had numerous side quests delay finishing a new release. There were new ideas which were too tempting to not explore, which resulted in several prototypes and back-and-forths.

So what’s new?

The original design had three k***s, as well as Shaun’s contribution of an internal “mids” trimpot to reduce the depth of the tone k**b scoop. This was such a powerful tonal transformation tool, that it got moved outside of the case.

If you really want to max out the “mids” k**b, then at some point it may sound nicer just to bypass the whole tone control. That’s why we included a tone bypass switch. This steps away from the signature scooped tone and towards a more transitional fuzz voicing.

Later production IC muffs were made a little bit warmer and smoother. This helped with top-end noise, and also to match modern amps being a little brighter. It’s a common DIY mod to bring this back to the original settings to add a bit more presence. Both versions are selectable using the bottom toggle switch, as well as a “cut” mode in the middle position which gives tighter distortion in the bottom-end.

The first five have a cheeky graphic on the circuit board. Possibly looking ~AUD$269 to local + NZ inc delivery. And a little more overseas.

Found some old boards cleaning up. This is the last carbon comp one. Sounds delicious. Special built in a slightly larger case. This is being delivered to Music Swop Shop to be sold.

I have a few similar boards left with brown metal films instead of carbon comps. This layout also use JFETs for clipping instead of regular silicon diodes.

ULTRA Rad Distortions are back on the menu! I don’t have any plans to continue the blue BIIIG Fuzz Dymo label style cases, and I had been looking for an artwork revamp for the Rad series. The black/white feels right for a rat. And Dymo for the era.

I do have one of the previous style cases left, if you’d rather.

I’ll update a gut shot down the track. But it’s yummy. Point-to-point tag strip build. With a heap of germanium and metal cans.

I think I need a Firebird in my life - today we are checking out the Epiphone Futura Firebird Custom…it’s gorgeous in its colour shifting colour, has tons of modern features and it’s priced quite well…what’s not to like??

New look for the Rad Distortions. This is an ‘80s-‘90s fuzz-distortion. The ‘hair’ k**b takes everything which we love about a stock Rat, and variably flattens the metallic response to something fuller and more traditional.

The main drive chip is a legit National Semiconductors LM308, in the metal can package for maximum mojo-factor. I bought a whole box of these, which is running out.

With the OD toggle, you can change from a distortion to a high gain overdrive. This removes the ‘chip fuzz’ aspect, and subs in 3x germanium transistors and 4x germanium diodes for rounder and warmer clipping.
