I gave Claude a new "skill" this week - and it stopped acting like a chatbot and started acting like a strategy consultant.
Here's what that means.
Claude now supports Skills — think of them as installable expertise. A Skill is a self-contained bundle of instructions and workflows that teaches Claude how to do one specific job properly, end to end, instead of just answering off the cuff.
The one I installed takes a raw business idea and runs a full validation process:
→ Live market research and sizing
→ Competitor battle cards and pricing breakdowns
→ Positioning and go-to-market strategy
→ Financial projections and unit economics
→ An honest, scored verdict — including the reasons NOT to build it
→ A concrete 30-day action plan
On its own, Claude gives you an opinion. With the Skill, it follows a rigorous, evidence-based process and hands you the kind of work a $10k consultant would deliver — in minutes.
Where do Skills come from? Anthropic ships some, but the real power is that they're open and shareable. Anyone can build a Skill, publish it (this one's open-source on GitHub), and anyone can install it into Claude — in chat, in Cowork, or in Claude Code. It's basically an app store for capability: you're not waiting for the model to get smarter, you're bolting on the exact expertise you need, when you need it.

A bit about me
I'm a software engineer. And that explainer video above? It wasn't edited by hand — I built a system that generates videos like this automatically, from a short script: animated typography, an AI presenter, voiceover, diagrams, even synthetic UI walkthroughs.
If you're working on something in software or AI — building a product, automating a workflow, or just trying to figure out what's actually possible right now — I'm available to consult or jump in and help. Always happy to talk shop, so feel free to reach out.
