If your phone won’t charge or only charges when held at an angle, a dirty charging port is a common and fixable cause. Before panicking, there are a few safe checks you can do at home.
First, power the device off. Use a torch to look into the port — you’re looking for lint, dust, or small debris that can block the pins. A soft brush (a clean, dry toothbrush or a small anti-static brush) can often remove loose debris. Don’t push hard or use metal objects. A wooden toothpick or a plastic pry tool can gently dislodge compacted lint if you work slowly and carefully.
Try a different, known-good cable and charger after cleaning. If the device charges with another cable, the problem may be the cable or charger rather than the port.
What to leave to a technician:
- If you see corrosion, bent/broken pins, or liquid residue inside the port, stop and bring it to a repair shop. These require inspection and possibly controlled cleaning or board-level work.
- If the device won’t power on, gets hot, or shows unusual behaviour after cleaning, switch it off and see a technician.
- Don’t use metal picks, canned air at close range, or forceful tools — those can damage pins and void warranties.
Unfortunately, some dishonest shops might quote unnecessary repairs if they’re not transparent. Ask for a clear explanation of what they found and whether they can show you the port before any work. At CQ Electronics we aim to show customers the issue and the cost options — but it’s always reasonable to ask questions or get a second opinion.
