GTM is getting an update 👀 If you’re still learning how tracking works, some of the new terms might be confusing. So here’s what’s changing in simple words.

Less JavaScript to load
GTM will be able to send data directly to Google Analytics and Google Ads without loading an extra Google tracking script first. That can help your website load faster.

Destination tags
The name sounds technical, but a destination is simply where you send your data. For example, Google Analytics is where you might send an add_to_cart or purchase event. Destination tags connect GTM to those Google services.

Settings in one place
There’s a new Settings menu inside GTM where you can manage shared settings for your connected Google destinations. Less jumping between different interfaces to find what you need.

More control when consent is denied
With Consent Mode set up, you’ll have more options to restrict what analytics, advertising and diagnostic data gets sent when a visitor hasn’t given consent.

The upgrade keeps your existing event tags, so you don’t have to start from scratch. You can also review and preview the changes before publishing.

I would still take my time with this. Test your events, check for duplicate page views and try both accepting and declining cookies to see what actually gets sent.

A new setup is only useful if your tracking still works properly 😊

Which marketing channel is actually bringing you sales?

A lot of Shopify founders look at traffic and assume the channel sending the most visitors is the strongest one.

But traffic alone doesn’t tell you enough.

UTM parameters are small tags added to your links. They help GA4 understand where visitors came from, what type of marketing brought them in, and which campaign they clicked.

That means you can compare things like:

Instagram → sessions, orders, revenue
Google Ads → sessions, orders, revenue
Email → sessions, orders, revenue

And sometimes the channel with fewer visitors is actually bringing better customers.

That’s why tracking matters.

Before increasing your budget, ask:

Which channel is actually producing results?

Better tracking gives you a clearer answer.

Your conversion rate dropped.

That looks bad at first… but not always.

Example:

1,000 visits → 40 orders = 4% conversion rate

2,000 visits → 60 orders = 3% conversion rate

The conversion rate went down, but you still made 20 more sales.

Why? Because conversion rate is only one part of the picture.

If a new campaign suddenly brings a much bigger audience to your Shopify store, some of those visitors may be less ready to buy than your usual customers.

So before changing your website because one percentage dropped, check what happened to:

Traffic
Orders
Revenue
Conversion rate

Read the numbers together before deciding what needs fixing.

Have you ever looked at Shopify and GA4 and wondered:

“Why are these numbers different?”

Ad blockers can be one reason.

A customer might complete an €89 purchase normally in your Shopify store.

Shopify records the sale.

But if their browser blocks the request going to GA4, that purchase may never appear in your analytics report.

That does not mean the sale disappeared.

It means GA4 could not observe it.

This is why it helps to think of the two systems differently:

Shopify = your business record for orders and revenue.
GA4 = behavioral data about how customers found you and what they did.

They support each other, but they are not designed to be identical copies of the same dataset.

So instead of expecting every platform to match perfectly, compare them, test your tracking and understand the reason behind the gap.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that your Shopify store is performing badly.

Your tracking might simply be missing part of what customers are doing.

For example, you could have two newsletter signup forms on your store but only one of them is tracked.

GA4 shows 128 signups.
The second form generated another 125.

Actual signups: 253.

If you don’t know the second form is missing from your tracking, you could easily underestimate your audience and make marketing decisions based on incomplete data.

That’s why good analytics starts before the dashboard. The actions that matter to the business first need to be tracked correctly.

Your Shopify conversion rate dropped.

Should you change your ads? Lower your prices? Redesign your website?

Not necessarily.

First, look at the journey your customers are taking.

If people are viewing products but not adding them to their carts, that’s one place to investigate.

If they’re adding products but disappearing before purchasing, that’s a completely different part of the journey.

Your analytics should help you narrow down where something changed before you start guessing why.

That’s the difference between simply having data and actually using it to make better business decisions.

You don’t need to be a data expert to understand what’s happening in your Shopify store.

Your customers are already leaving clues through the products they view, what they add to their carts, where they came from and what they eventually purchase.

The important part is making sure those actions are being tracked correctly and then turning that information into something you can actually understand and use.

That’s what we help Shopify businesses do at Global Core Analytics. 📊
